Gertrude Stein's famous yet stinging cut at Oakland (and the rest of the East Bay, including Berkeley, by default) was that "There is no there there."

I hope to show you that there truly is a there there - something I'd attribute to my four awesome years living and going to school in Berkeley.

Now in Stein's defense, literary contextualists will point out that she has been mistaken all these years because the quote is actually in reference to how upon returning to Oakland after many years away, she found that the house in which she grew up no longer existed.  So there was no there there.
