t h e. a r t. o f. r i c h a r d. .d. . p e r r y statement
From my earliest days as an artist, I have been interested in the play of light or atmosphere change on structures. In particular, I have always been fascinated by images that show the dramatic effects of accidents, either natural or man-made, upon the works of man and his marks upon the landscape and the world.
As a painter and graphic artist in New York during the 1960s, I was influenced by the exciting movements of the period: notably the painterly effects and use of collage as explored by some second generation abstract expressionists and the artists who followed them, like Rauschenberg, Johns and later, such color field painters as Olitski, Louis and Poons.

In recent years, following an extended period as an illustrator, graphic artist and writer on art historical subjects, I have returned to painting and printmaking, to explore with renewed interest many themes touched on in my earlier work, notably two paintings of the early 1980s: Breakdown on W.30 (above) and The Anacapa Lines (see below)
Through painterly and textural effects these works generally focus on the distortion and disintegration of geometric or man-made forms. A group of these works have been inspired directly or abstracted from graphic published images of industrial or natural disasters - fires, floods, volcanic eruptions, toxic spills, industrial accidents, crashes and explosions, etc.
My interpretation of such compelling and often highly emotional imagery should be viewed as creative and even transformational, rather than exploitive. Here are are some recent examples. More will be added from time to time.
In addition I have recently undertaken several series of monoprints (one of a kind) based on selected paintings.
