510 Mod's
Unfortunately I currently have to work outside, but the paint came out very well anyways, aside from a little paint on the tranny. The steering box was blasted and then re-painted. Note the 300ZX master cylinder and custom backing plate.
Before I could reinstall the engine, I had to section the front crossmember, and flip the center section. This would allow me to run a regular un-modified front sump oil pan from a Nissan Quest.
Here's the fabled MadDat front sump swaybar. Fit's perfectly on a front sump VG30. Also note the Quest oil filter location. The sway bar clears that nicely too. Sure beats the heck out of the stock 300ZX filter location.
This is what happens to box flares after 10 years, they crack and then rust forms underneath. All you could see from the outside was one small crack about 1" long right at the body line. I had no idea that the rust was so involved. Luckily it was still mostly surface rust, and hadn't made any holes yet. Tearing off bonded on box flares is a HUGE task. The second picture is after the flare was pulled off, ground down, filled in, and primered over. This also gave me the oppertunity to "tub" the wheelwell correctly.
I had a really hard time bringing myself to actually cut the rear panel and trunk floor from my beloved 510. The car had been in a wreck years ago, and the trunk floor was wavy and the P/O had cut out the spare tire well, along with some small waves in the taillight panel. The second is of a replica fiberglass piece from Classic Datsun Motorsports. I cannot stress how beautifull of a piece this fiberglass panel is. The fit is absolutely perfect!
To replace the bent trunk floor, I decided to go with a subframe covered with aluminum sheet. The small tabs at the back will be for mounting the fiberglass bumper.
This back window seam is a prime stop for cracking the paint, as it did on mine. I tack welded the two panels together and ground them down to avoid any future cracking. Also pictured is a rainbow of colors as I blend the fiberglass panel into the steel body.
