How this all started
History – The fascination with candy and chocolate
probably started in 1958, when I was young and worked in two candy shops,
Morrow's Nut House
and Copper Kettle Fudge,
on the boardwalk in Ocean City, NJ.
For years, we made fudge, pecan logs, coconut strips, pecan pralines,
but now my favorite is Butter
Almond Crunch. It
is an English toffee candy made with fresh creamery butter and chopped
toasted almonds, coated with real milk chocolate and finally coated
with more toasted almonds. It was nothing short of heavenly.
On mornings when we were scheduled for Butter
Almond Crunch, you would smell the freshly roasted almonds cooling and the aroma
of milk chocolate filled the candy kitchen as it melted for the coating.
Then, in assembly line fashion, the toffee received a coating of milk
chocolate and then a dredged in chopped roasted almonds, after which it would
rest in the candy trays until the chocolate hardened.
The Beginning - It's been a hobby for years. Then it went out of control. I used to make 6-8 lbs. of candy for the holidays or gifts. Then I give it to a friend who asked me to produce enough candy, 400 individual boxes, for a fund raising gala at the French Embassy in Washington, DC. In the mean time, I was invited to a Christmas party and decided to take 40 individual boxes for each person to take home as they left the party.
A few days later, I received several orders, one for a wedding and the other for a birthday gift. The party host is also is the promoter of the Washington Home and Garden Show at the D.C. Convention Center and they convinced me to "do the show". After agreeing, I started to think about what I had committed to do. We needed candy to sell and candy to sample. Well, long story short, we made over a quarter ton of candy for the four day show. People loved it.
Today - We've been making candy for 25 years to give to friends and family for the holidays. Suddenly, we had so many requests that I had to begin charging for the candy to cover costs and pay for shipping.
We make plenty of Butter Almond Crunch and we often give it as gifts to our friends and they in turn have purchased it to give to their friends. Our U.S. Congressmen and their staff on Capital Hill have even enjoyed it for the last five years. Now, this heavenly candy is available in your area.
