Articles and papers

An Erratum in Ernst Krenek's Twelve Short Piano Pieces written in the Twelve-Tone Style, op. 83:l Does it matter if you play the right notes? [In progress].

Explores the significance of a misprint in the first measure of "Peaceful Mood," op. 83 no. 2, through analysis and correspondence with the composer.

Four 18th Century settings ofThe Beauty of Israel is Slain: Biblical Allegory and Themes of Reconciliation in English and American Settings of II Samuel 1: 17-27.

-At the 1999 South Central Chapter Meeting of the College Music Society, University of Central Oklahoma, Edmond, OK.

While David's lament over the death of Absalom is a highly personal expression of grief on the death of his treacherous son, his eulogy for Saul and Jonathan is a public expression of sorrow over the loss of a noble, albeit flawed, leader and his son. It can be viewed as a conciliatory gesture, in which David seeks to win over Saul's followers and re-unify the nation. This study focuses on four 18th century musical settings of the Saul/Jonathan Laments. Their historical and literary contexts will be explored, and their publication history will be traced from 17th manuscript and madrigal collections, through the later singing tutors and anthem collections of Law, Walter, and Billings, and others. A heretofore undocumented setting from James Hewett's An Introduction to Singing... (1765) is discussed.

Davidic Sacred Madrigals and Anthems from Thomas Weelkes to William Billings: their literary and historical context.

-At the 1998 Northeast Chapter Meeting of the College Music Society, University of Albany, Albany, NY.

The tradition of English settings of the "Great Lamentations" of King David for Saul, Jonathan, and Absolom which flourished in the 17th and 18th centuries extends from Jacobean England to colonial America. These moving works arise in the context of several important literary and historical events, including the 1611 publication of the King James Bible, the mysterious and tragic death of the teenage Henry, Prince of Wales in 1612, the English civil wars, and the American Revolution.

Dogfight to Lullaby: Vernacular Forms in Alban Berg's Wozzeck.

-At the 1997 Northeast Chapter Meeting of the College Music Society, Trinity College, Hartford, CT.

While folksongs and other popular or "vernacular" forms are frequently used as "atmospheric" devices in opera, Berg makes use of marches, bugle calls, and a folk song lullaby to create unique musical characterizations.

Ryhming Retrogrades: Sonnet Structure in Rilke and Rautavaara (lecture recital).

-At the 1996 Northeast Chapter Meeting of the College Music Society, Muhlenburg College, Easton, PA.

The contemporary Finnish composer, Einojuhani Rautavaara, inspired by Rilke's Sonnets to Orpheus, makes use of unique periodic formal structures corresponding to poetic rhymes in his Sonnetto for clarinet and piano. A performance of the work by the author follows the presentation.

Victorian Anthems of the Oxford Movement: composers and theologians in dialogue.

-In Choral Journal, 12/93.

A study of the sermons and essays of Oxford Movement ("Tractarian") theologians such as Keble, Pusey, and Wilberforce reveals a remarkable correlation between their citation of Biblical texts, and anthems by Oxford educated composers such as Stainer, Goss, Ousely, and their contemporaries.

Reviews of books and choral music.

-In Choral Journal, 2/92, 3/92, 9/93, 3/94, 5/96. 10/96.
