THE DESCENDANTS OF HANS ARBOGAST
FOUR GENERATIONS
(to Michael Arbogast of Pendleton/Highland Counties VA)

Recently we learned that Michael Arbogast, b. 1732, had not come from Cologne, as has been widely published. His correct birthplace was a town called Kehl, located directly across the Rhine River from Strassburg, Alsace, in Baden. Several of us formed an ad-hoc committee for the purpose of following up on this new lead. Knowing that we could not reliably translate the German 17th and 18th century German handwriting, Pat Saletore, Elaine Jeter, and Charles Eades decided to pay a professional genealogist, Evelyn Roehl of Kin Hunters, to research and translate the appropriate church records of the Christuskirche, in Kehl, Baden-Wuerttemberg, Germany, that were available on microfilm.

We worked many hours to organize these translated records into an accurate genealogy for the Arbogast line from the earliest known Arbogast, Hans, up to the generation of Michael Arbogast who came to Pendleton/Highland in 1766. Please note that most of the dates for births are designated as "bp." (baptism) dates. - ej 3/26/2003

Notes for ANDREAS SOMMER:
Although the name "Andreas Sommer" appears on the Speedwell manifest, it is apparently not this Andreas, since he and his wife appear on the Kehl church registers in 1751.

O.F. Morton, 1922: "The Hist. of Highland County" lists Michael Arbogast as coming in 1766 to Crabbottom Valley/Village.

"Michael Arbocust and Hans Arbocust" (spellings differ from different transcriptions) arrived in Philadelphia on Sept.25, 1749, aboard the ship Speedwell (they are on the published ship's list). Captain: James Creagh

Michael Arbogast served in the American Revolution, in the unit under Peter Hull (or Holl). DAR number is Nat #484839. He participated in the Yorktown campaign, as well as from the earliest times of the Revolution, in the Pt. Pleasant Battle on October 10, 1774. Michael Arbogast's son, Adam, married the younger half-sister of Capt. Peter Hull. (various sources) EJ 4/23/98

Michael's oldest three sons, Adam, John, and David, also served in the unit commanded by Capt. Peter Hull.

Battle of Pt. Pleasant:

1775, January. A court of claims was held for Augusta County according to statute to settle accounts of the militia lately drawn into actual service and for making provision to pay same.

Reference, Augusta Historical Bulletin, Vol. 9, spring, 1973, p. 33. The statute referred to the service seen by the militia of western Virginia on October 10, 1774 at Point Pleasant, now considered the first battle of the American Revolution. Reference, Hennings Statutes at Large, V.9,p. 61-62. The Augusta County Minute Book, 1775, p. 119-129 lists individuals filing claims: George Mathews produced claims for the following which were ordered certified, Peter Hole (Hull), Leonard Leeman (Seeman or Simmons), Michael Armagust (Arbogast), Nicholas Harper, Peter Flasher (Fleisher) and Barnet Linch (Lynch). Note for Wife of Michael Arbogast:
Some have suggested that Michael had more than one wife, one possibly named Mary, another Elizabeth, and the surname Samuels has been suggested. This is unproven despite considerable research. - ej.

Burial record as translated by Frederick S. Weiser in "Records of Pastoral Acts at Christ Lutheran Church, Stouchberg, Berks County PA, Part II," p.102:

On the Reformed cemetery in Baeren (Bern) Township, Joh. Arbogast, a legitimate son of the late David Arbogast and his wife Christina. Was born 9 Sept 1703 at Kehl. Entered his first marriage in 1731 with Anne Margreth Burckler and had 4 children, and 1737 with Margreth Waltherin and had 10- children of whom 5 sons, and 1 daughter are living. Was aged 69 years 2 months and 3 days.

His birth record exists in Chrustuskirche, Kehl, Baden. He was b. September 9, 1703, and was the son of David and Christina. Christina was a widow at the time of Johannes' birth, since his father David Arbogast died on July 16, 1703, age 58.
