Descendants of Abraham Rhoades - 3 generations

Abraham Rhoades, abt.1805, d. 1877, has proven to be a classic genealogical "Granite Wall". He was married twice, first to Sarah Shaffer in 1827; secondly to Mahala ?Spivey, after 1852. Documents refer to him both as Abraham and as Abram. His birth parents and birthplace are uncertain, though on various later censuses, the birthplace is given either as Ohio or as Virginia or even as Pennsylvania (1880 census, by a daughter). He is found on the 1830 census living with his wife and two older children in Guernsey County, Ohio. Recently we have found some indication that he lived in the Muskingum County OH, or Washington County OH area before his move to Schuyler County IL in about 1849; and we have also found marriages for more of his children as well as information about Emily Caroline, his oldest daughter. That has been largely due to generous assistance from Eleanor Gordon, who works on the descendants of Eliza Ellen Rho(a)des and Jasper Allen Gordon. Thank you, Eleanor!

As for the name "Rhoades", that has been the most common spelling for the Page County, Iowa, branch for the past 100 years; but we have also found it in various documents as: Roads, Rhodes, Rhoads, Rodes. It may have originally been "Roth". Persistence as well as imagination is always a requirement in searching for families with this name, and so if we have inadvertently spelled some of these names in a "different" way than the reader may prefer, we apologize.

Quite a number of Abraham's descendants lived for some time in Page or Taylor Counties, Iowa, and some live in that area to this day. Much of the information on this family is original research, but facts have been supplied by the Sprigg descendants, David Sprigg and Phyllis Lee (Sprigg) McCulloch, and we have relied on the ANI by Pat O'Dell on the Taylor County Genweb site for a number of dates. Abra(ha)m and Mahala are buried in the Clarinda, Iowa, cemetery, and their gravestones (now destroyed due to vandals) were pointed out to me when I was a child by my grandmother, Mary Ethel (Filley) Spunaugle, who always decorated them for Memorial Day. Unfortunately, she did not even have complete information about her mother's (Josephine Rhoades Filley) brothers and sisters and this information came largely from other sources, such as the census. Generation No. 1

1. ABRAHAM¹ RHOADES was born Abt. 1805 in Pennsylvania, Virginia or Ohio (depending on which census you wish to believe!), and died on March 20, 1877, in Page County, Iowa. He married (1) SARAH SHAFFER December 19, 1827 in Guernsey County, Ohio. She was born 1807 in Virginia, and died before 1852. He married (2) MAHALA SPIVEY September 24, 1852, in Schuyler County IL. She was born Abt. 1821 in Missouri or Illinois, and died on July 2, 1881, in Page County, Ia.

Abraham is also called "Abram" on many documents, including the record of his gravestone transcribed from city records in Clarinda, Iowa. His granddaughter, Mary Ethel Spunaugle, always referred to him as "Abraham" so I have chosen to use that form of the name here. Abraham was unable to read and write.

Sarah's (also spelled Sara) maiden name was found by Eleanor Gordon in "Marriage Index - Selected Counties of Ohio 1789-1850"; Sarah and Abraham had 9 known children; Sarah was enumerated on the 1850 Woodstock Twp., Schuyler County IL census; however, by 1860, Abraham, still in the same township, was married to Mahala Spivey. Mahala and Abraham had 7 children. Members of both families lived in Page County, Iowa. Information on these families is primarily from census, but some comes from other sources such as the memories of Ethel Filley Spunaugle, and the Illinois Marriage Index. At least two, and probably three of his sons served in the Union Army. Abraham has been found on Censuses of 1830 (Guernsey County OH), 1850 & 1860 (Schuyler County IL), and 1870 (Page County IA).

Mahala's maiden name is cited as Sprigg on an LDS site, apparently copied from the marriage records of Saline County MO; with marriage date of May 30th, 1837, (the original document gives 1837, not 1839 as the index cites, as the marriage date) but we believe her name was not Sprigg, primarily because there were no other Sprigg families within more than 150 miles of Saline County at that time. The "Sprigg" seems most likely to be an error on the part of the clerk who copied the marriage data given to him by Abner Gwinn, Elder, who performed the marriage. That clerk's name was Grigg; we think he inadvertently mixed up "Grigg" and "Spivey" when he recorded the marriage. We have not found a truly provable birth family for her in Missouri though she usually gave "Missouri" as her birthplace for census, except for the 1850 census which cites "Illinois". If her maiden name was "Spivey" as she recorded when her son George Washington Rhoades, was born in McDonough County IL, then she is likely to be the child of "Elisha Spivy" and "Athay Guyn" (most likely Athaliah Gwinn) who were married in Cooper County MO in 1822. She is certainly the same woman as the "Mrs.Louisa Millsap" who married "Abram Rhodes" in 1852 in Schuyler County IL. Her first husband (m. May 30, 1837) was named Job Millsap; he is on the 1850 census in Saline County MO with wife "Mahala" and four children, and on the 1840 census for Polk County MO--2 males 20-30; 1 female 15-20, 1 female under 5. Her two youngest children from this marriage, Abner and Jonathan Millsap, also appear on the Schuyler County IL 1860 census (neither living with Mahala), giving added weight to our belief that she was a widow at the time she married Abraham Rhoades. Research continues on this difficult identification.

Note: We believe Jackson's full name was Andrew Jackson Rhoades; and he enlisted in the Union Army from Woodstock Twp., Schuyler County IL; he seems likely to be the Andrew Jackson Rhoades who married Jane Foster in McDonough County, Apr. 10, 1861. Jane later married another man, indicating the possibility that Jackson Rhoades may have died as a result of the Civil War. This is as yet unproven.

According to the 1903 obituary of his sister, Eliza Ellen, Abraham (Jr.) joined the Army as a career and served "out West".

Another child, Margaret Rhoades, age 9, is listed on the Census of 1860; she is listed on no other censuses, and it is not known if she is the child of Sarah or of Mahala. It is not known what happened to her. EJ 2003.

Francis Marion appears on the Census of 1860, and Census of 1870, but we have been unable to find him on the Census of 1880 or later. It is possible that he died before 1880.

Her name on census is not legible; we believe she was named Louise or (more likely) Louisa. We have a photograph of her, taken after her marriage, with "Aunt Lu Maxfield" written on the back of the photo, which was taken in San Francisco CA. probably about 1890. Ethel Filley Spunaugle believed that Aunt Lu Maxfield had no children. Her name on the Census of 1920 is given as "Louise" Maxfield.

She married JASPER ALLEN GORDON October 25, 1870 in McDonough County, Illinois, son of ROBERT GORDON and MARTHA MILLIGAN. He was born August 15, 1843 in Adams County OH, and died June 05, 1917 in Galesburg, Knox County IL.

Information on this family was supplied by Eleanor Gordon, whose husband is descended from J.A. Gordon. It has been confirmed on the Census of 1880. Eliza's obituary has been examined as well..

The marriages of Grace Filley are as deduced from various documents. She was Grace "Huck" in 1921 at her parents' golden wedding celebration, and "Baize" in her father's obituary, Dec. of 1940. Her last husband, George Graves, was also found in the SSDI. She and her first husband, Jacob G. Huck, are found in the 1900 census in Louisville CO, and in the 1920 census in Denver CO.

17. MAUDE ALICE³FILLEY (JOSEPHINE²RHOADES, ABRAHAM¹) was born March 11, 1891 or 1892 in Prb. Page County, Iowa, and died September 15, 1980 in Long Beach, California. She married GEORGE SHERMAN. He was born in January 26, 1890, in Colorado, and died August 2, 1962, in Long Beach, Los Angeles County, CA.

In 1971 I took Ethel Filley Spunaugle to Long Beach, California where she visited Maude Filley Sherman. While I was there, Maude's son, John G. Sherman, paid a visit. This was the last time these sisters were together.

18. JULIA³RHOADES (JAMES ERWIN², ABRAHAM¹) was born February 05, 1882 in Page County, Iowa, and died January 09, 1970 in Municipal Hospital, Clarinda, Iowa. She married WILLIAM F. HOWARD November 04, 1900. He was born February 15, 1882 in Clearmont, Nodaway Co., Missouri, and died March 1970 in Municipal Hospital, Clarinda, Iowa.

Julia and Bill Howard ran a general store in Shambaugh, Iowa; she and her siblings were all double-cousins to my grandmother, Ethel Filley Spunaugle and her siblings.
