William Spunaugle - Descendants, Second Generation

William Spunaugle's eleven children who grew to adulthood had many children of their own. We know of at least 75 grandchildren. Here they are, with their parents, in the "second generation", with individual numbering continued from the first generation:

2. CATHERINE²SPONAUGLE (WILLIAM¹, BALSOR) was born September 19, 1834 in Randolph or Pendleton County VA, and died October 23, 1868 in Elkhart, Indiana. She married JEREMIAH SAMPSEL ANAWALT 1856 in Lewis County, VA, son of JACOB ANAWALT and ANNA SUTTER. He was born October 29, 1835 in Berlin, Somerset, PA, and died October 29, 1915 in Okmulgee, OK.

Note: Catherine's descendant, Ilene Hawkins, kindly furnished information on this family; much of it has been confirmed or supplemented by census records and from family Bible images from Marrion Newberry. Catherine and her husband were living in Jackson County MO on the 1860 census, but for some reason they moved to Indiana during the Civil War.

3. MARIA²SPONAUGLE (WILLIAM¹, BALSOR) was born June 06, 1837 in Randolph County, VA, and died May 30, 1925 in Clarinda, Page Co., Iowa. She married DAVID E. VLIET July 18, 1858 in Greenbush, Warren County, IL, son of DANIEL VLIET and LYDIA EMERY. He was born July 22, 1837 in Warren County, New Jersey, and died April 15, 1899 in Clarinda, Page Co., Iowa.

4. MARY²SPONAUGLE (WILLIAM¹, BALSOR) was born August 10, 1838 in Randolph County, VA, and died Bef.1880 in Prb. Page County, Iowa. She married JOHN D. SPRIGG Abt. 1856 in Weston, Lewis County, VA/WV, son of JAMES D. SPRIGG and ELIZABETH BENNETT. He was born Abt. 1834 and died June 7, 1880 in Washington Twp., Page County IA.

Note: Information on the family of Mary and John D. Sprigg was contributed by David Sprigg of Sacramento, California, a descendant, as well as from Census records and from Phyllis Lee (Sprigg) McCulloch, also a descendant. On the 1850 census, the family of William Spunaugle was living next-door to the family of Elizabeth Bennett (who was apparently a widow by that date.)

5. WILLIAM JACKSON² SPUNAUGLE (WILLIAM¹, BALSOR) was born January 10, 1840 in Randolph County, VA, and died October 02, 1909 in Clarinda, Page County, Iowa. He married (1) MARY ANGELINE GILLSON January 12, 1865 in McDonough County, Illinois, daughter of JAMES W GILLSON and ELIZABETH ISABELLA CAMPBELL. She was born January 19, 1846 in Prb. Marion County, Ohio, and died April 30, 1883 in Yorktown, Page County, Iowa. He married (2) ANNA McDONALD May 15, 1885 in Clarinda, Iowa, daughter of ARCHIBALD McDONALD and ELIZABETH MOORE. She died August 05, 1896 in Clarinda, Iowa. He married (3) MARY WEIDNER (not her maiden name. she had at least two prior marriages) May 25, 1897 in Clarinda, Iowa. She was born March 1853. He married (4) PEARL C JOURNEY June 08, 1909 in Clarinda, Iowa, daughter of JOSEPH JOURNEY and SAMARIA KEYSER. She was born 1871 in Iowa, and died September 1912 in Iowa.

Parents of Anna, his second wife, are from the 1890 Biographical History of Page County... and have not been independently confirmed. Her name at the time of marriage to William Jackson Spunaugle was "Anna M. Markel"; she was a widow.

He married (1) LUCINDA MEADS February 13, 1866 in McDonough County, Illinois. She was born abt 1848 in prb. Wayne County Ohio, daughter of JOHN MEADS and JULIANN MILLER and died Bef. 1890. He married (2) URSULA BELLE BOYLE Abt. 1890 in Craig County, OK, daughter of WILLIAM BOYLE and MARGARET HEATON. She was born March 10, 1864 in Illinois, and died February 18, 1943.

He may be the father of the Spunaugle family found on the 1930 census in Portland, Multnomah, Oregon; they claim to have come from "Ohio" but there are no possible Ohio families who spelled their name "Spunaugle" and it seems likely that "Ohio" was either a misstatement or an inaccurate recording by the enumerator of "Iowa".

Note: Information about Emma Spunaugle has come from the records of Ralph, Ervin, and Philip Spunaugle, as well as from Emma's daughter, Birdie Hill, and from census records. Emma had a number of boarders in her large house in Clarinda, Iowa, and census indicates that at times she provided a home to several other family members..
