(For Second and Third
Generations, click on the links below.)
This is by no means a complete genealogy of William Sponaugle/Spunaugle, 1814-1888. Although every effort has been made to ensure accuracy, there are possibly some errors and omissions; documented corrections and additions are always welcomed. William's family Bible is owned by one of his descendants, and its information has been available for this genealogy; and countless hours have been spent scrolling through census images and microfilms. Special thanks are due to the many family members who helped, as well as to the generosity of Pat O'Dell, who has compiled and posted the Abstracted Newspaper Indexes of Taylor and Page Counties on the Taylor County Genweb Site, an invaluable aid for numerous birth, death, and marriage data. Only a few of the related documents are cited in this three-generation genealogy; complete documentation is on file for over 1,000 individuals, either descendants or those married to descendants of William Spunaugle. Here is a partial list of contributors:
Nancy Spunaugle Crawford, Allen Douglas, Mary Spalding Granger, Merritt Lee Spunaugle, Ilene Hawkins, Rebecca Rocks, Jackie McPherson, Russell A. Spunaugle and Brian Spunaugle of New York, Jack Gowing, Douglas Spunaugle of Oklahoma, Anna Marie Hula, David Sprigg, Phyllis Sprigg McCulloch, Paul Spunaugle of Kansas, Eleanor Williams Cabbage, Carol Spalding Pawlak, Twila Spunaugle of Oklahoma, Theresa Mann Elliott, and Diana Kimes. Posthumous thanks to Birdie Hill, Nola Flagg Mathers, Ralph Spunaugle, Philip Spunaugle, Ervin R. Spunaugle.
Full documentation is available on request.

census and/or correspondence with Waybright, Galford, and Pugh families. Rachel

b.1732 who arrived in Philadelphia in 1749 on the ship Speedwell. (Click

ii. JACOB SPUNAUGLE, b. December 14, 1835, Randolph County, VA;

Note: Jacob Spunaugle never married. He served in the Union Army 1861-1865 in Company C "Bissell's" Engineering Regt. (later merged with 1st Missouri Engineers.). Jacob lived with various family members after 1850, as indicated by censuses of 1860,1870,1880,and 1900. --cf. National Archives, U.S. Census records, and recollections of Ralph Spunaugle.

vi. MARTHA JANE SPONAUGLE, b. April 10, 1842, Randolph Co., VA; prb.
died before 1850.
Note: At least one informant believes that she married "Ed Halterman". Edward Halterman b.abt.1849 (a nephew of Jemima Waybright Spunaugle) signed as a witness for the marriage licenses of Henry Spunaugle and John Samuel Spunaugle. If Martha did marry Ed Halterman (which seems extremely doubtful), she apparently died before 1878 when Edward Halterman married Susan Minnick, according to the Abstracted Newspaper Indexes of Taylor and Page Counties (ANI) posted by Pat O'Dell. Ralph Spunaugle's notes say he "doesn't know what happened to Martha." Her name does not appear on any census records with the family, but she is listed in the family Bible. The preponderance of evidence indicates she died as an infant or young child.
