DESCENDANTS OF WILLIAM H. FILLEY (B.ABT 1808)
3 generations

William H. Filley was born about 1808 in New York or Connecticut, according to census. We believe that “New York” is most likely his birthplace though his unknown father was probably born in Connecticut. He and his brother, Israel D. Filley, emigrated to Big Island Township in Marion County OH before 1830, settled briefly in Cass County, Michigan in 1838, moved back to Ohio by around 1842, and on to Caldwell County, MO before 1850. His parents are unknown, but it is certain that there were other siblings as well; including sisters named Abigail (m. Benjamin or Henry Barns) and Hannah(m. Riverius Messenger) who were married in Marion County OH. We believe the most likely scenario is that the father of these Filley siblings died sometime before 1820 probably in New York state; his widow (name also unknown) remarried and moved to Ohio with her new husband and her Filley children. In any case, this family is descended from the Puritan immigrant, William Filley, who came to Massachusetts about 1630, and in 1635 was one of the founding settlers of Windsor, Connecticut, the oldest town in Connecticut, where his "plantation" appears on the original plat of the town not far from the stockade. Information on our William b.1808's descendants is primarily from Census, land, and marriage records, with dates from the ANI by Pat O'Dell on the Taylor County Genweb site, and personal recollections of Francis Marion Filley, William's son, and Mary Ethel "Ethel" (Filley) Spunaugle, his granddaughter. 1. WILLIAM H.¹ FILLEY was born Abt. 1808 in New York or Connecticut, and died Aft. 1862 in Caldwell County MO, or Page County IA. He married ABIGAIL JANE REYNOLDS February 16, 1832 in Marion County, Ohio. She was born May 03, 1813 in Connecticut or Ohio, and died August 14, 1894 in Clarinda, Page County, Iowa.

Abigail Jane Reynolds had two marriages after the death of William H. Filley; but no children by either marriage. In October of 1881 she married Caleb Lincicum in Page County, Iowa; after his death, she married Thomas M. Chaney, who died in April of 1894 a few months before her own death. She is buried as "Abigail Chaney" near the grave of her son, Francis M. Filley, in the Clarinda, Iowa, cemetery. Her birth family is inknown; census "place of birth" was variously stated as Connecticut or Ohio on census records, though Connecticut was used more frequently.

3. LEWIS JOHN² FILLEY (WILLIAM H.¹) was born January 05, 1840 in near Kalamazoo, Michigan, and died May 14, 1922 in Council, Adams County, Idaho. He married MARY ELLEN BOMAR March 14, 1871 in Nodaway County, MO, daughter of FIELDING JOHN BOMAR and CHARITY HUTCHINS. She was born April 21, 1854,in Kentucky and died May 11, 1911, in Custer County NE.

Some of the information on the family of Lewis John Filley has been donated by Mary (Filley) Richards of Texas, who is descended from Lewis Filley. Census records have also been important sources for this family. It is possible that Lewis had a previous marriage, but we have been unable to confirm that.

The marriages of Grace Filley are as deduced from various documents. She was Grace "Huck" in 1921 at her parents' golden wedding celebration, and "Baize" in her father's obituary, Dec. of 1940. Her last husband, George Graves, was also found in the SSDI. She and her first husband, Jacob G. Huck, are found in the 1900 census in Louisville CO, and in the 1920 census in Denver CO.
