Dayton Diary 2009 - Wednesday 4/15 (Day #1- Travel)

Dear Diary,

I just had this strange dream. My memory of it is blurred but I recall getting up at 3:00 am and going to the high school. The whole drumline was there and, along with several of their parents, we boarded a yellow school bus. I remember seeing Mr. Meeuwsen carrying what looked like an instrument case. At 4:30, we started moving and the next thing that I remember is being at an airport that looked a lot like LAX. I saw faces that were familiar to me including kids from other lines including RCC and Mystikal. As the bowl of petunias thought to itself - "Oh no, not again!"

After consuming the equivalent of two vente mochas I arrived at the realization that this is no dream - a nightmare maybe - but what is happening is real. I'm heading to Dayton with a plane load of drummers whether I like it or not.

The next leg of the journey was non-eventful. Many of the kids used the flight to Twin Cities to catch up on the sleep that they missed the night before. The only thing of note was a strange announcement over the plane's PA system asking for the person who checked 12 rabbits on-board to please identify himself... curiouser & curiouser!

Mystery solved! It turns our that the bunnies weren't just your common or garden variety.  In Fact, they were none other than pedigree bunnies that a lady was transporting to a bunny show.

The flight from the Twin Cities was also packed, on time and non-eventful - and this time there were no bunnies. So far the flights have been smooth and the weather has been beautiful until we arrived in Ohio where it is 46F, cloudy with drizzle.

It took us longer than expected to get through the formalities of renting 8 vehicles at Columbus airport but we finally arrived at the hotel around 9:15pm. Since everyone was starving we made a quick dash to the local Chipotle to grab a bite to eat before they closed. The staff were very friendly and thrilled to hear that their restaurant was one of our most popular stops while in Dayton. The kids also got a chance to do their now traditional Wal-Mart run before unloading their stuff from the truck, getting their room assignments, attending the first nightly meeting before heading off to bed.

We received several very positive comments today from fellow passengers and the staff at Chipotle about the behavior of the kids. This is a great bunch to travel with and parents reading this should be proud.
