NS 9925 leads NS 227 westbound at Gainsville, VA, on the B-line, November 21, 2009. The ties for the new passing siding are down, and rails have been added. If this is like the other construction in the area, the siding is built by a contractor, and the actual connection with the main is put in by NS crews. This is the west-end of the passing siding from Wellington.

I went out to the H-line to meet Dave Decker from Dayton, OH, and show him the H-line from Cedarville to Shenandoah Junction. NS 6598 leads NS 11R southbound at Berryville, VA, with Nick calling the signals.

I had seen NS 6312 early this morning on the Trainorders "Harris Tower camera," so we were expecting the special to come down the Valley line. NS SD50 rebuilds 6312 and 6313 lead NS 955, consisting of Research 34 and 38. No clue if the object was to test the rebuilds in road service (they normally stay up near Altoona to work on the mountain as helpers) or if they are just being transported to Roanoke.

Research 34, which has been around awhile.

Research 38, which is brand new. Looks weird with the long frame and the little fuel tank.

Up at Shenandoah Junction, all hell has broken loose. Eastbound Q411 went into emergency down by Weverton, and there is a broken rail on track 1, making all traffic use track 2 from Shen to Sandy Hook. CSX 4807 leads Q400 westbound on track 2 at the Junction.

As Q400 goes west, NS 9919 leads 37Q southbound on the H-line overhead.

NS 228 held the main at Shenandoah Junction, while NS 9925, with NS 227, came into the siding. 227 also had to wait for 37Q, and after 37Q had cleared, 227 comes out onto the main to head north. NS 227 had two cars to drop at VIP today, and comparing with the first picture, each of the first two cars were stand-alone wells, so only 4 containers were dropped at VIP.

Flying westbound low down the B&O was a UFO ... a great blue heron. Although the long neck gets tucked in during flight, those legs must be a real drag.

The third of four westbounds in a fleet, CSX 748 leads U323 (empty SC hoppers) westbound.

Last of the four is CSX 7504, and another standard cab Dash 8, leading Q217 westbound on track 2. All of the westbound switched from track 2 to track 1 at Shen.

CSX 858 leads U306 (SC coal) eastbound through Shen and over the rebuilt Ridge Road crossing.

CSX 708 leads L415 eastbound at Shen.

We started out the day at Cedarville ... no trains. On the way south we stopped at Success ... no trains. As we we about to leave, I heard 12R called the Woods signal on the B-line, so we set up at Cedarville. NS 9128 leads 12R northbound at Cedarville, VA at dusk.
