I am inquiring regarding the fate of Major Eugene Lacy Wheeler, USMC,
serial number 287-32-5923 who was shot down over Quang Nam Province,
Vietnam on April 21, 1970. Search and rescue personnel were in
contact with Wheeler the day his aircraft was downed and managed to
rescue his copilot. No remains were ever found and no one saw him
fall. There is no evidence that he was killed.
This American pilot has remained on the MIA list for 31 years.
Does not his devotion to country afford him the privilege and honor of
being buried in the soil of his homeland by his family, if indeed, he is
deceased? Should by some miracle, Wheeler remain alive, should he
be left behind in a foreign country knowing the country he served has
abandoned him? Do not his family and friends, especially his wife
and three children, deserve to know his fate? Should they not
finally have closure?
Please advise me of any and all actions being taken by you or other
elected or appointed officials to determine the fate of Major Wheeler.
In the event that there is nothing being done, please explain why
not, and tell me how you personally plan to correct this and prevent it
from ever happening again. Additionally, please advise me if there
is any way I can be of assistance in facilitating this matter.
