Welcome to the Oklahoma International Folk Dancers Site. The Oklahoma International Folk Dancers is a non-profit group for the enjoyment and preservation of recreational folk-dancing. International folk dancing includes the traditional social dances of many countries and cultures, danced to their authentic music. The dances are danced in a variety of formations, e.g. short lines, circles and couples. Many dances are easy to learn; you don't need to come with a partner. Its fun for people of all ages and nationalities.
We delight in sharing our dance and music with others. Dances are usually taught by local teachers, while guest instructors teach at workshops organized from time to time throughout the year. Beginners are welcome, no previous dance experience necessary. Except for costume parties, dress is casual. Wear comfortable, non-marking shoes.
The OKCIFD meets every Monday evening at the Unitarian Church at NW 13th Street and Dewey. During February and possibly March, 2010, we are meeting at the City Arts Building at the Fairgrounds while Daniel Hall is being renovated at the Unitarian Church. DIRECTIONS TO CITY ARTS CENTER: - Enter the Fairgrounds from May Avenue at GATE 5, or Gordon Cooper Blvd (traffic light) south of NW 10th Street. Drive a short distance and turn right on Land Rush Street. Follow it to City Arts Center (domed building) on the left. When you enter City Arts, walk thru the Art Exhibit area to the dance studios at the back of the building.
We encourage newcomers to come at the beginning of the evening so as to take advantage of the teaching sessions. Classes for beginners start at 7:00 p.m., followed by classes for intermediate/advanced dancers at 8:30 p.m. From 9:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. there is request dancing. Request dancing is usually done without instruction.
We believe that international folk-dancing promotes friendship, encourages us to learn more about other cultures, and provides good exercise to great music! We invite you to come and join the fun.
