Media information:
I use soft pastels, which are sticks of compressed pigments (color) that
are held together by a binder on gum or kaolin clay. I work on either heavy
acid-free black cotton paper, or sanded pastel paper, (very fine sandpaper).
I use fixative on the first sketch layer.
Creation process: I gather, shoot or collect photos. I then take selected views and mix them together using several images to create a sketch. I project the sketch onto my paper and spray it with fixative. The colors are layered on, usually darker colors go on first, with highlights applied last. The piece is then put away until a mat and frame are selected and cut by my wife, Kathy. The piece is reviewed and finalized. Kathy frames and prepares it for exhibition. Artistic intention: Without light, all life would cease. This simple fact of life causes us to be tied, not only physically, but emotionally to its existence. Its importance creates integral connections that cause strong emotional responses. I want to illicit an awareness of this from the viewer. It is my hope that my use of light, engages the viewer in an experience that is a reminder of how vital nature is to our lives. |
