Descendants of Thomas Tooley

As a child I loved Grandad Pete (my great-grandfather, Charles Pete Tooley). My grandmother says he had a problem with alcoholism during the Great Depression, but he'd been "saved" and later worked for the Salvation Army. I don't know all the details of his life, but I remember him coming over wearing his carpenter jeans and carrying his tools to do some project on our house.

Grandad was a simple man. He told a story that when my cat died, I had prayed to God for it to come back alive, and it did. Now, I don't know the deal with that cat. But I'm impressed that a 70 year old man had the faith that his great-grandson could raise a cat from the dead. I wish I had that kind of faith too.

He was able to look at things from a child's point of view. My first sister was born when I was two years old, and I suppose I was a bit jealous of the attention she was receiving. My mother was breast feeding her, and my sister bit her. I heard mom cry out, and saw her lay my sister on the bed and leave the room. When mom came back she found me trying to smother my sister with a pillow. Mom was upset and stressed out, so she had dad take me to Grandad's house for awhile. I sat on his front steps crying my eyes out, and Grandad came out to comfort me. He told me how happy I should be to have a little sister, because when she grew up, she'd bake me cookies. And I have liked her ever since (and he was right, she did bake them).

I wish I knew more about Grandad's lineage. But everything I find stops with his great-grandfather, Thomas E. Tooley. I've heard that the family came from Ireland, but so far I haven't found that link that takes the family back overseas.
