The Holy Spirit Surprises You by Giving You What You Need

 

Retired priest Fr. Leven sometimes participates at Mass here at St. Monica. I have known him for 20 years, going back to when he was pastor of St. John the Baptist. There was always something unique about him, especially after Communion when he would talk aloud to God. I felt as if the Holy Spirit was talking through him.

 

A couple years ago he had heard good things about Peru and had to go there to find out for himself. The pastor there asked Fr. Leven if he would go and talk to a group of ladies. He told me that he went, and although he said he knows no Spanish, his talk went well. I was always sure that he was stretching things a little, but now I know that he wasnÕt.

 

I went to Peru this year for a month. I was answering a call of the Holy Spirit and could not say Òno.Ó I have studied six foreign languages and have learned that languages are not one of my gifts. Anticipating my problems with Spanish, I began praying continuously to the Holy Spirit before leaving and while there.

 

Strange things began happening while in Peru. IÕd have prayer books in English and Spanish and sometimes I did not know in which language I was reading. It was scary the first time I realized this.

 

While in Peru I gave eight retreats in Spanish. Some were planned so that I could prepare while others were a surprise and only little preparation was possible. I do not like these kind of surprises! I was amazed that all retreats went well and that the recipients just loved what I did for them. I like to be in control, but I did not do all this by myself; the Holy Spirit was working through me. I was in community and things just fell into place, such as someone helping me when I ran out of Spanish words. This is how I came to believe the story that Fr. Leven told me.

 

So, when you pray to God, especially for help, to which person of the Trinity do you pray? Thank goodness there are three persons because of the great variation of Christians in the world. I used to pray just to the Father. The Son seems to be a better choice since Jesus was both divine and human making it easier to relate to him. But, being human meant that Jesus could only be in one place at a time. So when he ascended into Heaven, he left us the Holy Spirit who can be everywhere and anywhere at the same time.

 

In todayÕs gospel, the Father breathed on his disciples and said, ÒReceive the Holy Spirit.Ó We are disciples today through our baptism when we received the Holy Spirit. At confirmation, the bishop or priest says, ÒBe sealed with the gift of the Holy Spirit.Ó Then he says, ÒPeace be with you,Ó exactly as Jesus said to his disciples.

 

At baptism, we hear that we are to proclaim the word of God. At confirmation we hear that we are to proclaim to the entire world Christ crucified, living and reigning forever. If you have been baptized and confirmed, are you proclaiming Christ?

 

Pentecost is the last day of the Easter Season. For seven weeks scripture readings have told us something about the Holy Spirit. In the gospel from last weekend, Matthew gave us our marching orders: ÒGo, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you.Ó In todayÕs gospel, John says, ÒAs the Father sent me, so I send you.Ó

 

How do we go and do that? How can we do it with confidence? If we pray to the Holy Spirit anything is possible. Think of the stories I told you about Fr. Leven and me in Peru. When I prepare a homily or get ready to make a presentation about some aspect of our faith, I pray to the Holy Spirit. I am sometimes surprised at some of the words that I say when I need them. Maybe I shouldnÕt be surprised if I completely trusted in the Holy Spirit the way we all should.

 

Listen for the Holy Spirit in our prayers at Mass today. Can you remember the Opening Prayer? ÒGod our Father, let the Spirit you sent on your ChurchÉ.Ó Listen carefully to the Prayer Over the Gifts, the Eucharistic Prayer, and the Prayer after Communion. I was very surprised one day at Mass when the word ÒSpiritÓ grabbed my attention each time I heard it.

 

This Easter Season should have helped us realize that we have received the Holy Spirit who will support us to help build up the Kingdom of God by making disciples of all nations. It worked for the early Church as we hear in Scriptures. You are the disciples in todayÕs Church. You have the Holy Spirit. If you havenÕt activated the Holy Spirit yet, pray to the Holy Spirit and be surprised by what happens. And donÕt think you are alone. This community will support you.

El Esp’ritu Santo te sorprende cuando te da lo que necesitas

 

El Padre Leven, jubilado, a veces participa en la Misa aqu’ en Santa M—nica. Hace veinte a–os que lo conozco, desde cuando Žl era el pastor en San Juan Bautista. Siempre ha habido algo œnico de Žl, especialmente despuŽs de la Comuni—n cuando le hablaba a Dios en voz alta. Me sent’a como si el Esp’ritu Santo hablaba por medio de Žl.

 

Hace dos a–os que el Padre Leven hab’a o’do cosas buenas del Perœ y tuvo que ir para enterarse a s’ mismo. El pastor en el Perœ le pidi— al Padre Leven que diera una charla a un grupo de se–oras. Me dijo que lo hab’a hecho, y que aunque no sab’a hablar espa–ol, su charla sali— bien. Yo siempre estuve seguro que exageraba un poco, pero ahora sŽ que no exageraba.

 

Este a–o fui al Perœ por un mes. Respond’ a la llamada del Esp’ritu Santo y no pude decir Òno.Ó He estudiado seis idiomas extranjeras y me he enterado que los idiomas no caen entre mis talentos. Calculando mis problemas con el espa–ol, le roguŽ sin cesar al Esp’ritu Santo antes de salir y mientras estuve all‡.

 

Sucesos raros empezaron a ocurrir mientras estaba en el Perœ. Llevaba libros de oraciones en inglŽs y en espa–ol y a veces no me fijaba en cual idioma yo estaba leyendo. Me espantŽ la primera vez de que me di cuenta de esto.

 

Mientras estuve en el Perœ, di ocho retiros en espa–ol. Unos estaban planeados para poder prepararlos, mientras otros fueron tal sorpresa que s—lo ten’a poco tiempo para prepararlos. ÁNo me gustan sorpresas como Žstas! Fue una maravilla que todos los retiros salieron bien y que los participantes se encantaron de lo que hice para ellos. Yo prefiero tomar el control, pero yo no hice todo esto yo mismo; el Esp’ritu Santo obraba por medio de m’. Yo estaba en comunidad y las cosas cayeron en su lugar, tal como alguien asistiŽndome cuando me faltaban las palabras en espa–ol. As’ es como lleguŽ a creer lo que me hab’a dicho el Padre Leven.

 

Entonces, cuando le ruegan a Dios, en especial por ayuda, Àa cu‡l persona de la Trinidad le rezan? Gracias a Dios que hay tres personas a causa de la gran variedad de Cristianos en el mundo. Yo estaba acostumbrado s—lo al Padre. El Hijo parece ser mejor opci—n, ya que Jesœs era ambos divino y humano y es m‡s f‡cil relacionarse con Žl. Pero, siendo humano quiere decir que Jesœs s—lo pod’a estar en un lugar a la vez. As’ es que, cuando ascendi— al cielo, nos dej— al Esp’ritu Santo que puede estar en todas partes y en cualquier lugar al mismo tiempo.

 

En el evangelio de hoy, el Padre sopl— sobre los disc’pulos y dijo, ÒReciban el Esp’ritu Santo.Ó Nosotros recibimos el Esp’ritu Santo. En la confirmaci—n, el obispo o el padre dice, ÒRecibe por esta se–al el don del Esp’ritu Santo.Ó Luego dice, ÒLa paz estŽ con ustedesÓ, precisamente como dijo Jesœs a sus disc’pulos.

 

En el bautismo, o’mos que debemos declarar la palabra de Dios. En la Confirmaci—n o’mos que debemos declarar al mundo entero el Cristo crucificado, que vive y reina para siempre. Si has sido bautizado y confirmado, Àdeclaras a Cristo?

 

PentecostŽs es el œltimo d’a de la temporada de la Pascua. Durante siete semanas las lecturas de la escritura nos han dicho algo del Esp’ritu Santo. En el evangelio de la semana pasada, Mateo nos mand— a paseo: ÒVayan, pues, y ense–en a todas las naciones, bautiz‡ndolas en el nombre del Padre y del Hijo y del Esp’ritu Santo, y ense–‡ndolas a cumplir todo cuanto yo les he mandado.Ó En el evangelio para hoy, Juan dice, ÒComo el Padre me ha enviado, as’ tambiŽn los env’o yo.Ó

 

ÀC—mo vamos a ir a hacer eso? ÀC—mo lo podemos lograr con confianza? Si le rogamos al Esp’ritu Santo, cualquier cosa es posible. Piensen de los relatos que les contŽ acerca del Padre Leven y de m’ en el Perœ. Cuando preparo una homil’a, o me preparo para hacer una presentaci—n acerca de nuestra fe, le rezo al Esp’ritu Santo. A veces me sorprenden algunas de las palabras que se me vienen cuando las necesito. A lo mejor no me sorprender’a si tuviera completa confianza en el Esp’ritu Santo como deber’a tenerla.

 

Escuchen del Esp’ritu Santo en nuestras oraciones en la Misa hoy. Escuchen atentamente la oraci—n colecta, la oraci—n sobre las ofrendas, la oraci—n Eucar’stica, y la oraci—n despuŽs de la Comuni—n. Yo estuve muy sorprendido un d’a en la Misa cuando la palabra ÒEsp’rituÓ me llam— la atenci—n cada vez que la o’.

 

La temporada de la Pascua deber’a habernos ayudado a darnos cuenta que hemos recibido el Esp’ritu Santo que nos apoyar‡ para ayudar a crear el reino de Dios haciendo disc’pulos de todas las naciones.

 

Todo sali— bien en la edad temprana de la Iglesia segœn escuchamos la Sagrada Escritura. Ustedes son los disc’pulos en la Iglesia de hoy d’a. Ustedes poseen al Esp’ritu Santo. Si aœn no han activado al Esp’ritu Santo, ruŽguenle al Esp’ritu Santo y sean sorprendidos por lo que sucede. Y no crean que est‡n solos. Esta comunidad los apoyar‡.
