1.  plot – the series of events or actions which occur in a story

2.  conflict – the problem or struggle in a story

3.  exposition – the part of the story that introduces the characters,  setting,

                         and basic situation                       

4.  rising action – the events from the beginning of the story up to the climax 

5.  climax – the turning point or highest point of interest

6.  falling action – the events that occur after the climax and lead 

                              to the end of the story

7.  resolution – the solution to the problem or outcome of events

8.  chronological order - the order in which events occur in time

9.  flashback – a scene inserted into a story showing events that occurred in the past

10.  foreshadowing – when the author gives hints or clues as to the outcome of the story

11.  figurative language – writing that is not meant to be taken literally

12.  minor character – a character who takes part in the story’s events,

                                    but is not the main focus of attention

13.  main character – the most important character also known as the protagonist

14.  dynamic character – a character who grows and changes emotionally during the story 

15.  static character – a character who stays the same throughout the story

16.  flat character – a  one dimensional character having only one or two traits revealed

17.  round character – a character who if full developed with many traits revealed

18.  direct characterization – the writer actually states the character' traits

19.  indirect characterization – the writer reveals the character’s traits through

                                            what the character says and does

20.  protagonist – the main or most important character of a story

21.  antagonist – a character who causes problems for the protagonist

22.  point of view – the perspective or vantage point from which a story is told

23.  narrator – the person telling the story

24.  irony - a surprising or amusing contradiction between what happens                  

                   and what is expected

25.  analogy - a comparison of the relationship of things or words

27.  first person point of view - the narrator is a character in the story

28.  third person limited point of view - the narrator is not a character in

                  the story but views the story through the eyes of one character

29.  third person omniscient point of view - the narrator is not a character

               but views the story through the eyes of more than one character

30.  setting - the time and place of a story

31.  motive - the reasons for a character's thought, feelings, actions or speech

32.  theme - the central message about life revealed in a literary work

33.  prediction - making logical assumptions about the outcome of events

34.  atmosphere or mood - the feeling created in a reader by a literary work

35.  sequence of events - the order events occur in a narrative

36. cause - the reason something happens

37.  effect - the result of something happening

38. fact - something that can be proven true

39.  opinion - something that is based on a belief  and can not be proven

40.  fiction - prose writing about imaginary characters and events

41.  nonfiction - prose writing about real characters and events

42.  science fiction - fiction writing that is based on science and technology

43.  historical fiction - prose writing where the main character and plot are                

                   not real, but some of the people, places, and events are real

44.  realistic fiction - true-to-life fiction
