Trent Lott's Disgrace

Letter to the Editor:

The recent disgrace of Republican Senate Majority Leader Trent Lott explains why 90% of blacks in Florida voted for Al Gore, and why Florida's Secretary of State Katharine Harris, who was also chairwoman of George W. Bush's presidential campaign, prevented 94,000 primarily black voters from voting in the 2000 election by claiming they were ex-felons, an accusation that wasn't true for at least 10,000 of them. Had these 10,000 blacks not been denied their constitutional right to vote Gore would have easily won the state of Florida.

And so the sordid cycle continues. Republicans prevent blacks from voting in order to get elected so they can continue their oppression of blacks. Republicans have a long history of disfranchising those who won't vote for them.

Trent Lott's proposed replacement, Sen. Bill Frist (R-Tenn.), also received a grade of "F" on the NAACP Congressional Report Card, as did other mentioned candidates, senators Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, Don Nickles of Oklahoma and Rick Santorum of Pennsylvania. The "F" grade means they voted more than 60 percent against legislation supported by the NAACP.
