Derby Masonic Lodge Announces Local Essay Contest Winners

Derby Masonic Lodge 365 is pleased to announce three local Derby High School students have been selected as local essay contest winners for 2005. The topic for the 47th annual contest was “To what extent is the education concept ‘No Child Left Behind’ viable?” Essays could not be longer than 500 words. From the essays submitted three were selected as finalists. First place honors and a $100 scholarship were awarded to Stephanie Melton. Second place went to Sami Froncek and third place to Amanda Knabe. Each year the Grand Lodge of Kansas A.F. & A.M. conducts this essay contest whereby Kansas High School students compete for scholarship awards valued from $500 to $4000. Local Masonic lodges are asked to sponsor contests in their cities and submit their first place winners for state level competition. Stephanie Melton’s essay was selected by local Masonic lodge members based on content, style, and grammar. A total of $12,000 will be awarded in the state contest. Winning amounts are: first place, $4,000; second place, $3,000; third place, $2,000; and fourth place, $1,000. Four honorable mention awards of $500 each will also be presented. On January 23, the three award winners and their families were invited to Derby Lodge 365 for dinner where they were formally recognized by the lodge membership and presented their awards by 2006 Derby Lodge Master Don A. Blake.
