BKA*

My musical tastes are eclectic and varied, but probably not nearly wide enough.

As my oldest friend (shown below) demonstrates, diversity can sometimes be taken to extremes. (If you take a french horn, a tunable bell trumpet, another trumpet, the bell from a trombone, a bit of imagination, and a bottle of wine or two, you can make some very ... original sounds).

I began as a singer way back in junior high school, and also took up trumpet for a couple of years. In high school, after transferring to a school with a lousy vocal teacher, I went back to the trumpet and have stuck with it since, adding trombone, tuba and various other instruments as needed over the years. I've had the good fortune to play in the U.S.Navy band, as well as with Bill Yeager's L.A.Jazz Workshop Band, Louis Bellson's Big Band Explosion, the Toshiko Akiyoshi/Lew Tabackin Big Band, and many bands in and around San Diego, and Los Angeles, CA.

On trumpet I played a Martin "Magna" horn, as designed for Mic Gillette, formerly of the Tower of Power - it's a monster of a horn, with a .470 bore and a 6" bell, but well suited to those of us who double extensively on low brass. I've had a third valve trigger installed, which helps intonation. On it, I used a custom Jet-Tone mouthpiece I had made while I was in the navy band.

SOLD July, 2007. My playing has changed enough in the 25 years since I bought this horn that I'm just not strong enough to really fill it any more, so I'm going to something smaller. Currently looking at a variety of horns with .463 bores, but haven't decided yet.

I finally decided on a Yamaha YTR-738 trumpet to replace my Martin. It's basically a Yamaha copy of the Schilke X3, but cost considerably less. This horn is 30 years old, but was played very little, and then put into storage, so it's basically in mint condition. before buying it, I considered a Marcinkiewicz Vermeer trumpet, but was outbid on EBay for it. I considered a Callet Soloist, but the cost was a bit high. I considered a Schilke X3 or B3, but the cost was very high. The Yamaha is a .463 with a large bell (you can se the flare of the bell is different from the Martin) in near mint condition, and when money allows I'll get a trigger put on the third valve, and a precision valve alignment. I've also gotten a custom tuning slide for it from http://mkdrawing.com/- a single radius slide in bronze, which opens up the feel and darkens the sound enough for my needs. I'm using a custom Marcinkiewicz mouthpiece on it, and it plays very nicely. Marcinkiewicz does very good work, and I've had several 'pieces made by them, and they're always friendly and reliable, and their stuff is High Art.

My other trumpet is an Olds Ambassador that has had some work done on it to open up the sound a bit. With its medium-large bore (.459) you'd think it would feel tight, but it actually has a fairly open feeling. I use a custom Jet-Tone mouthpiece I had made back in 1978 on it, and use it for gigs where I need to blend into a section (mostly pit orchestra work), or where I feel uncomfortable taking a more expensive horn. It plays well, but it easy to 'over-blow'.

I also have a Holton "MF" horn (model ST-550) that I got for my nephew when he was playing, and which I borrowed when he stopped and I was between horns. It is on semi-permanent loan until he wants it back., and I use it occasionally for section gigs. It plays pretty well and very open, but has some intonation issues. I use my custom Marcinkiewicz mouthpiece on it.

For Flugelhorn, I currently have two - one is a Blessing flugel with a red brass bell, and a custom mouthpiece Joe Marcinkiewicz made for me (above). The Blessing has a decent sound and passable intonation, but the valves needed several years of play and work to get decent. It also needs a trigger for better intonation when the 3d valve is used. The other is an Olds SuperStar flugel in silver plate (below) which has excellent valve action, plus hooks for the first and third valves, but has a brighter sound than the Blessing. Each has different places where it is best used.

For smaller, more intimate settings and playing dixieland I have a nice little Olds shepherd's crook cornet, with a Marcinkiewicz 5XW mouthpiece. This horn doesn't project well, but it has a wonderfully warm sound, and handles nicely. I also have a Jupiter Slide Trumpet/Soprano Trombone that is just plain silly, but occasionally useful where the key changes constantly and the music is all improvised. I use a Jet-Tone T2B mouthpiece on it, and am looking into getting a Curry TF mouthpiece for it to round out the sound. Currently the sound is a bit thin and undefined with the slide in first position. These two horns were photographed together, just to give an idea of scale.

I picked up a Holton D/E-flat Model T-150 trumpet for a steal that plays very nicely. On it, I use a Marcinkiewicz E 8.7* Mic Gillette mouthpiece that allows it to play in tune and with a good sound. With the 3C that came with it, it's a bit flat. (Shown with Eb slide)

And I also recently got a Benge 90C C trumpet with a Marcinkiewicz E8.1* JWM mouthpiece. It has been useful in legit settings (church and orchestral) and jam sessions.

On trombone, I have:

A Bach 36 with a Jet-Tone Urbie Green M which I use for pit orchestra work, section work, and "mystery" jobs ("Hey, man - we need a trombone - be here at 8:00!"). A thoroughly useful, all-round horn.

A Roth-Reynolds tenor with a Marcinkiewicz ET7 "Steinmeyer" mouthpiece that I use for playing lead and rock parts, though I have a Jet-Tone Studio B(LW) I can use for playing second chair. It's an older horn, nearly 50 years old, but well maintained and recently re-lacquered, and plays very nicely.

I just picked up a second Reynolds, this one even older (it dates to 1954), but is a valve trombone, with a case that handles both a place for the valve section and for a slide. And for the price I paid for it (less than just the usual price of the valve section and a case) it's a very good deal. Plays nice, too. For the moment, I'm going to be using the Steinmeyer on that horn, and seeing what works best.

And a Benge Symphonic 190, which I am using for jazz bass and "legit" work, using a Denis Wick 0AL mouthpiece, which can cut through when needed, but still gets a good fat sound below the staff.

I've also picked up some work on the Baritone /Euphonium. I started out when I got the call by getting a student model Euphonium on E-Bay, but have recently upgraded to a very nice Olds Baritone with two different bells, depending on what sound you want, and a third valve trigger for intonation. After some experimentation I'm using a Jet-Tone 6 1/2 AL(LW) mouthpiece on it. As playing the baritone has increased the number of (legit) calls I've been getting (including a recent symphonic gig), I'm calling it an investment, not an expenditure.

My primary use for this horn was as the Principal baritone player of the San Diego Concert Band until I left there for (better) paying gigs.

I'm shopping for a good concert bass bone and a piccolo trumpet. I also have an Eb alto horn for wierd calls, or for just getting silly (yes, it is possible to play jazz on an alto horn. It's just wierd). Thinking about a Mellophone, but not seriously (yet).

My favorite "wierd horn" is my Olds "Marching Trombone" which I use for playing baritone parts, fast/valve trombone parts (Ashley Alexander and Rob McConnell parts), and small combo jazz, especially in small rooms where a slide trombone would be likely to bump into things. I want to get a trigger installed on the first valve someday, but it's not a high priority yet. I use a Jet-Tone 6 1/2 AL mouthpiece for it, as it's a .508 bore horn, and wants a brighter sound.

My french horn is another Olds Ambassador - a "single" F horn, which I've found a Yamaha 39C4 mouthpiece for. I don't get a lot of french horn calls, but I've found it useful for proofing concert band parts, for pit orchestra doubling, for the occasional sampling session, and for playing Rob McConnell charts. I recently filled in with the Point Loma Orchestra on 3rd horn, which was fun, but not something I'd want to do a lot.

Simply because I'm a lunatic ("he's mad! Mad, I tell you! Bwah-ha-ha!!") I also bought me a tuba. It's an old Conn EEb, and was in need of some repair (marked BD OF ED NYC 1964), but it was priced right, and should be fun. Yes - I have no real need for a Tuba, but I have some ideas for creative uses, and having it listed in my resumé can't hurt. Well, not unless I get a lot of tuba calls and herniate myself again. ;) Nah - it's not really that heavy. I spent a lot of time playing mouthpiece bingo with it until I could discover what worked, and then had Joe Marcinkiewicz make me a 107 for it. I had the major dents removed by my friends at The Windsmith, and it plays very nicely indeed, but still has a great "Dixieland" look to it.

Now I have to find (or write) some tuba/bass duets for me and my brother to play!

THE LOW BRASS: Bb Baritone, Eb Alto Horn, EEb Tuba

My primary musical influences are:

The Tower of Power. These guys kick serious ass.

Their former horn section leader Mic Gillette is an old friend (and absolute monster on the brasswinds), and helped to shape my technique and sound for many years.

Red Rodney. A seriously melodic player in later years who played with "Bird" Parker in his youth, who re-defined for me what the trumpet was capable of expressing musically. He was one of the people whose encouragement kept me in the music game when the business half of "the Music Business" got too wearing.

Maurice André. If you want to hear a wonderfully fluid sound on the classical trumpet, especially the piccolo trumpet, go no further. (Well, maybe to "Doc" Severinsen or Alan Vizzutti, but...)

The Canadian Brass.

Rob McConnell and the Boss Brass / Rob McConnell Tentet.

Bob Florence. who is missed.

Bill Yeager, trombonist extraordinaire, and good friend.

Bill Watrous.

Sandy Weishaupt - gone but not forgotten

Carl "Doc" Severinsen.

Jack Sheldon - trumpet and humor. (and singing and acting and...)

Tom Kubis - a frighteningly good arranger who helped me to re-think my arranging.

Dave Greeno - sadly all but unknown outside the business, but a monster of a player, good friend and very good teacher. (Center below, still playing his ass off in his 70's!, with the late Bart Hazlett, Trombone, and Bob McKewen, Clarinet) and the Del Mar Fair, 2003.

Charlie McGhee (drummer extraordinaire),

Fred Benedetti (scary good classical guitarist),

Fred Ubaldo (bass and recorder),

Stan Kenton,

Bill "Count" Basie,

Lydia Pense and Cold Blood (a band you really should hear, given the chance),

BS&T

and way too many others to list here.

(Fred Benedetti shown here - he's the one on the right, playing with his partner in crime, George Svoboda).

And for the past three or so years, I've taught an amazing groups of kids. The Jazz Ensemble started out as a bunch of kids that wanted to play jazz, and have ended up competing to go to the Monterey Jazz Festival, gigging all over town, and recording a professional CD. Some ... stuff happened, and the kids have gone independent, running the band themselves, and are doing a very good job of it. I'm still available to them at need, but am no longer officially affiliated with the band. I have no doubt at all they'll do just fine without me.

I've also been asked to help in the management and leadership of the San Diego Concert Jazz Band. The band has been together since 1976, and the latest leader has just retired from the music scene for medical reasons. I've been playing with this band off and on for more than 25 years, and some of the best musicians in town have played with it. Right now we're undergoing some re-organization, but most of the musicians have agreed to hang in through the re-shuffling, and we still have a band of "A" list players and a great library. It should be a lot of fun. I'm working on the library (very large), and the web page right now (to come real soon now), while Tim (the senior co-leader) is working on staffing. I'll put up a picture (the logo I designed is at right) and some details when I can. in the meantime, we have:

Trumpets

1st - Tim Jameson
2nd - Steve Ebner
3rd - Ron King
4th - Leo Adelman

Bones

1st - Gary Bucher
2nd - Steve Kohlbacher
3rd - Kevin Malmgren
4th - Tim Hall

Saxes

2nd A - Becky Fleming
1st T - Bob Campbell
2nd T - Bill Shreeve
Bari - Mike Carnahan/Ross Rizzo

Rhythm

Drums - Gary Nieves
Piano - Rick James
Bass - Jeff Blanco

Though I get more calls for 'organized' work - Big Bands, Concert bands, orchestral stuff and the like, I still love to play combo jazz. I got to put together a group to play at my friend's book store a couple of times, and have gotten a few (not enough) of those gigs recently, but want more. Of course, only with good groups, and hopefully for money, but... you do what you can.

Playing at Mysterious Galaxy Books in May of 2006. Patrick Armenta, Drums; Rick James, Piano; Paul Dershem, Bass; Me, trumpet & Trombone; Kent Dugan, Sax & Clarinet.

*Brass Kicks Ass!

I've also spent considerable time and money collecting sheet music. Some of it has been bought, but quite a bit (all of the Marty Conley charts) have been acquired in trade for my setting them into Finale and printing out professional-quality parts. The following lists the music I currently have available:
