David Ellsworth Finley was born on
August 8, 1888, in Ashland County. He and his second wife, Irene
Rickabaugh, had four children, Bill, George, David, and Elaine. He
also had a daughter, Myrtle Mae Finley, with his first wife. David
Finley owned the Ashland Taxi Company, and, at the time of his death, was
proprietor of a local restaurant. He loved to fish and hunt, and his
favorite fishing hole was Pine Lake, near Akron. Every
Wednesday, his day off, he went fishing at one of the local lakes.
David Ellsworth Finley died November 2, 1936, of a brain tumor.
Irene Rickabaugh Finley was born on
May 4, 1903. She married David Ellsworth Finley in 1924 in Ashland,
Ohio. They lived in the Crowell block at the foot of Claremont Street
after their marriage. Irene was an exceptional cook, and devil's
food cake was a family favorite. She had a light touch with pie
crust, and her black raspberry pie was memorable. Irene loved to
laugh, and her great sense of humor helped her deal with the shenanigans of
her young sons. In 1950 Irene suffered a stroke that left her
bedridden for years until her death on April 29, 1962.
They left the rich legacy of a close-knit and
loving family.
