Adam Coppess was a stockraiser and farmer. He assisted his father until he was 20 years old, when he became a hired farm hand. In two years he had saved sufficient money to buy 80 acres in Darke County. In 1851 he moved to Gillam Township, Jasper county, Indiana by overland route in a covered wagon. He purchased his home there from a Mr. Robinson and erected a hewn-log house in which he lived for many years. He and his wife were members of the Methodist Church.

The following biographical account is from Wilson's Darke County, Ohio History:
Adam Coppess was born in N. Carolina, but being of an adventurous spirit was willing to brave the dangers of what was then considered to be the West, left his home in the southland and came to Green Co., Ohio, going from there to Darke Co., Ohio, in 1824. With him in his operations was his son John Coppess. They secured government land for which they paid the customary fee of $1.25 an acre. From this property they developed and made valuable man acres of land, and on this land John Coppess raised his family.
On first coming to Ohio he located in Greene County and it is said that he had to hide to keep from being murdered by the Indians. He entered land for himself and his sons and made a clearing and built a log house which stood for many years. He took an active part in laying out roads in his locality, clearing many acres of land and in connection with his trade, manufactured cow bells by hand. He was a Democrat and Lutheran.
