Lewis Williams [Parents] was born on 6 Dec 1822 in Ashfield, Franklin, Mass.. He died on 6 May 1904 in Sharon Springs, Wallace County, Kansas. He married Susan Maria Reed on 7 Nov 1871.

Lewis Williams, born in Ashfield, Mass. and his wife, Susan Maria Reed of Ohio
tree homesteaded a claim of land on April 11, 1892 southeast of Sharon Springs,
Kansas. He was told about this land having wonderful spring water on it,
thus their interest in settling there while riding a train to Sharon Springs,KS
from visiting in Denver, Colo. Their son, Lewis James Williams was 12 years
old at this time and he lived the remainder of his youth there except for some
winters when the family would store their belongings in a building (Madigan
Store House) near where the Wallace, Ks museum is and travel by train back east
for Lewis James Williams to go to school.
Lewis Williams & wife owned a home in Brooklyn, N.Y. and time was also
spent in New Jersey (possibly Bloomsbury, Huntesdon Co.), Easton, Penn.
(Berwick?) and Ohio. It is not known how the great grandparents met. Lewis
was a drummer (traveling salesman); worked in the textile business and farmed.
Lewis Williams served in the Civil War (1861-1865) with the Massachusetts
52nd Army Regiment as a volunteer from Ashfield, Mass. and was called up Oct.
1862. He was 40 years old and single. They drilled there for 2 1/2 months
and were sent to New York for a month. Then they embarked on a steamer
"Illinois" destined for Baton Rouge, Louisana to serve as a part of General
Banks expedition on Dec. 4. They arrived Dec. 17. They made camp there. Then
on March 11 they were given orders to march towards Port Hudson apparently to
distract the attention of the rebels while Farragut's fleet was going up the
river to attempt to pass Port Hudson. An excited fellow comrade accidentally
shot Lewis in the stomach after the order was given to march. He could no
longer serve and was hospitalized and later discharged Aug. 14, 1863. He
carried that bullet in his stomach the rest of his life. He married our
grandmother eight years later and had 2 children. He filed for an invalid
pension Jan. 11, 1894. Betty Hess has his military record from Washington
archives. Also after his death his wife filed for a widow's pension and had to
send her marriage certificate as proof to Washington. In 1978 (107 years
later) with agreement of surviving brothers Merlin & Jim Williams, Betty
Hess received the original from the archives and has it framed.
