Information obtained June 1980 by Betty Williams Hess & Karen Hess at Ashfield,
Mass. library. Taken from a book Geneology of Ellis Family, pg 395
taken from address at a Williams family gathering in Ashfield in 1878 about
Ephraim. Said he was a skilled surveyor and in constant demand by early
settlers. He bought many of the soldier's claims and owned more that 1500
acres, afterwards which he gave to his children.
After wedding on Sept. 14, 1775, he and his bride slept between 2 hemlock
trees on his great coat, keeping up his camp fires as a protection against
wild animals. During the night the howling wolves appeared near enough for him
to see their eyes glisten in the light of the fire.
By 2nd night they had a cabin built. $13.30 for cabin or mill? Ox wagon
was constructed for wedding trip. Had 2 yoke of good oxen, seat for the bride,
and many good wishes offered to them for their happiness. Cart whip in hand,
smooth plains he rode beside her. Within 3 miles of new home, only a bridle
path. She stayed with friends for about a week. Winter came later. No corn
could be ground nearer than 9 miles away. Snow 4' deep. He pounded corn in a
5 gal. pail iron kettle with mill bar. Before he got his bride he went to New
Boston, bought 1/2 a steer, bound it on his saddle. If wolves attacked he was
going to cut the meat loose, but his good steed got him through. Used teams
and shovels to break out roads. Hunting, fishing and trapping helped for food.
