Like his brother he received a great fief from William the Conqueror as a reward for his aid in the invasion of EnglandAt the Doomsday Survey he possessed one hundred and thirty-one Lordships in Suffolk, Lincoln, Gloucester, Warwick and Stafford, but because eight-one of these were in Staffordshire, and Stafford Castle was his residence, he became known as Robert de Stafford.
He made gifts of his Lordships at Wrotestye and Livenstune to the Monks of Evesham, and founded an Augustinian Priory at Stoke (Stone). Buried with his wife, Avice de Clare in the Priory of Stone.
