Joseph Howe [Parents] was born in 1720 in , , , England. He died on 4 Mar 1794 in Sunnyside, Polaski Co., Virginia. He married Eleanor Dunbar about 1748 in Boston, Massachusetts.
Joseph Howe, a son of James Howe of Nottingham, and a grandson of General Scrope Howe and his wife Ruperta, daughter of Prince Rupert, being of the younger branch of the family, and having evidently little hope of preferment in his own country, decided to try his fortune in America. Tradition says he made two visits to America, and made the second visit with a commission from the British Government to investigate the forts the French were building along the Ohio River. He left England in 1737 on a ship bound for Boston. On the ship he met and fell in love with a fellow passenger, Eleanor (or Ellen) Dunbar, who was coming to America with her parents. Soon after landing in Boston the young couple were married and lived at first near the Dunbars in New England, near Sudbury, Massachusetts. Later the Dunbars moved to the southwestern part of Virginia, where they felt they would find much better prospects for success.
In the region in those days roughly designated as Augusta County, they patented several tracts of land. The Dunbars settled somewhere in the vicinity of Cow Pasture River and, for a time, Joseph and Eleanor Dunbar Howe lived near them. A little later, the young couple patented extensive holdings of their own.
