Eric(George) Hansson(Norman) [Parents] was born on 12 Sep 1851 in Alfta Socken, , , Sweden. He died on 5 Jul 1937 in Scott City, Scott, Kansas. He married Mary Evangeline Yelm on 8 Jun 1881 in Rock Island?, , Illinois.
He changed his name from Eric Hansson to George Norman after immigration to the
United StatesGeorge Norman was born Eric Hansson the son of Hans Jonsson, in the
villiage of Galven, in the parish of Alfta. The town of Alfta, which even
today numbers no more than a few thousand inhabitants, gives its name
to the parish - or "socken". It is primarily a farming and timber region
north and west of Stockholm in the area called Helsingland. Alfta is
located father north than Anchorage, Alaska, still far south of the
northern region of the country that reaches past the Arctic Circle. The
region today has the air of stability and tradition about it, still very
much the preserve of nature, unfettered by few intrusions of the
industrial world. As it happened, the emigration of Eric Hansson and
thousands like him to America in 1872 represents a rather abrupt
turning point in the history of the region. For centuries before that, life
in the Alfta region must have varied only slightly from one generation to
the next.
Until the age of 21, Eric Hansson's life must have been very much
like that of his ancestors. During summer months he worked on the
farm, helping to plant and harvest oats, barley, rye, wheat, and potatoes.
In the winter he worked with a timber contractor, measuring and cutting
logs from the abundant forests surrounding the farm. He earned about
fifty cents a day plus his board. His primary education consisted of six
weeks of instruction a year in the home of a neighbor. At the age of
fifteen Eric attended high school for three months, thus completing his
formal education.
In an interview in 1932 with one of his grand-daughters, Eunice
Shull, Eric explained how he had come to America. An older brother had
traveled to the United States and returned to tell of the great
possibilities the new land had to offer young farmers. His own father
had died when Eric was only forteen and the family was struggling to
make ends meet. Thus, his mother, born Annie Olsdotter, decided to take
four sons and two daughters and emigrate to America. They set sail
from Gothenberg (english version of Goteborg) in 1872, landing first in
Hull, England, and traveling by rail to Liverpool. From there they sailed
on the steamship Wyoming to New York, where they joined waves of
other emigrants at Ellis Island in search of a new life. Here Eric changed
his name to the more Anglo-sounding George E. Norman and began
learning the English language. The family first settled near Galesburg,
Illinois, where they took up farming.
