In September he was made first sergeant; in February 1862, he was commissioned second lieutenant; in October of the same year he was promoted to first lieutenant and subsequently to captain. He was wounded in the leg at the Battle of Shiloh; then at Hatchie, October 5, 1862 he was wounded in the arm and again at Jackson, Mississippi, he was wounded in the thigh. He was discharged at Davenport, Iowa on June 8, 1865, on the expiration of his enlistment period.

In 1858 at the age of 18 he left Tennessee and located at Carrollton, Greene
county, Illinois where he engaged in farming. He returned to his native county
in Tennessee in 1860 until the Civil War broke out. Although a
southerner by birth, he was loyal to the North and served with the Union Army
in Co. C, 57th Regiment of Missouri Volunteers. He was captured by
Confederates in 1862. After the war we worked in mercantile stores in Keokuk,
Iowa, Springfield, Illinois, and came to Kansas in 1868, clerking in a store in
Kansas City for three years until he had saved $1,000 with which he started his
own business in Spring Hill, Kansas. He stayed until 1874, when he disposed of
his interests and moved to Winfield. He established a store at 8th & Main
although it was more than a block distant from any other store in the business
district. The business was conducted as a general store until 1888, when it
was changed to a department store. He was a former Mayor of Winfield and
represented the district in the Legislature in 1903-04.
Laura French was born in 1851 in Ohio. She died in 1886. She married John Bell Lynn.
