Diana's Books

FAQ

When you distribute books locally, are the books really free?

Yes.

You may have to listen to our inspirational message, about how we accept all donations, and how we ship books to international beneficiaries. You may have to listen about how we sell books online to raise funds, and how we distribute locally for free, and then, recycle for paper. You may be asked for a donation of money, materials, or time. You will not be asked for any personal information, and your choice to donate-in-kind is still just that, a choice.

Was it really free?

Who is Diana?

“Diana” is the name we give to anyone who would rather reuse a book.

There are classical representations of the Roman Goddess Diana, who was the huntress. What is less known about the classical Diana is that she hunted to protect nursing mothers and children. We believe that in the future, the distribution of free books to those who want them will help protect and nurture mothers and children.

There is also the cultural icon, Princess Diana, who is the “Diana” known to our beneficiaries. Although we did not think of this prior to it being brought to our attention, we hope there is a natural correlation between the Princess’s perceived ideology and ours.

20 boxes shipped in 2006: What is a “box” of books?

Physically, the box we use for shipping is the same size as a 10 ream copy paper box.  It weighs around 50 pounds, and holds approximately 20 books. The postage to send a single box of books via surface mail is approximately $70.

But a box that sent is not a box that is buried in an American landfill, or burned in American incinerator.

To those who receive the boxes, a box is a gift of love and knowledge. It means that there is a resource for education and knowledge where previously there was none. An unusual love is shown. Someone, whom they will never meet, cares enough to reach out and share.

What kind of books do you send?

We send a wide variety of good quality books, but focus on children’s, educational, relationship, and spiritual, per our beneficiaries’ requests. We have sent sets of encyclopedias, how-to-manuals, and a lot of dictionaries. Amos Dodo and Rev. Lee both asked for Bibles, and received them. David Mulama asked for the hunting/fishing/farming instructions. Catherine Ngmala asked specifically for children’s books. We do not want to be censors, but to send books costs money, and choices must be made.

What kind of books won't you send?

We generally will not sent alternative spiritual material, including, but not limited to, Scientology, Mormon, Michael, tarot, crystals, voodoo. We generally will not send American-cultural specific books, like how to make a killing on wall street, how to apply make up, American history, or toy ads disguised as children’s books.  Some of this can be difficult, for example, cookbooks versus nutritional information. We will not send torn or dirty books, incomplete sets, or encyclopedias older than twenty years.
