I made this site to prove to my friends that it's
entirely possible and reccomended to code an excellent webpage entirely in
notepad. This was my first crack at totally designing a site from the
ground-up with simply HTML and no graphical editor or template to help me.
If you have any input, click and scream to
Code vs. Design
To make a webpage and have total control over all the
diverse elements one can utilize, you need to code it yourself. To code, you
obviously you need to know HTML. To do that, I reccomend you go to
GettingStarted.net. Once
you know how to code, you can graduate to learning how to design. Once you know
the main tags as presented at GettingStarted.net, you should be ready to think
about what you want to create. Draw it out in your head or on paper, and consider
how you will get there. That is design. To a certain extent, coding and
design are inextricable, yet you must first master one before you can really
start to appreciate the other. An excellent design resource is
Zeldman.com. This site leads you on to several valuable sources and
insights for pro or novice. However, you should know what YOU are going to code.
Go to other websites to analyze their design and view their source. And please,
for everyone's sake, use a legible font and font color.
Advanced Coding and Effects
If you want to go beyond HTML to add spice to your website,
consider learning javascript and/or DHTML (think of them as the same
thing). If you want to take the easy path, simply go to Dynamic Drive and check
out the wide variety of effects they can give you. Here's a the only
scriptlet I've written: click here to get two
simple scripts that deframe a framed site and reframe a direct-linked
page.
Software
One can't write without the proper
tools. There are many editors, but I have learned to like the "Microsoft Development Environment." It comes
with Microsoft Office, and I believe it isn't installed by default. If you have it,
it will at
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio\Common\IDE\IDE98\MSE.EXE
or something like that. And of course, there's notepad, which works just fine.
Dreamweaver is a great HTML editor (even WYSIWYG!), and I currently use it.
For image work, I can highly reccomend Photoshop, but don't
forget that you have paint for the basics.
Common (D)HTML Issues
There were some stumbling blocks for me while
learning HTML, and there are some while I have a renewed interest in DHTML. However,
I will publish them as I think of them.
- Learn by trying.
- Steal code, find out how it works, and emulate it.

11.07.02 Added Faye. Multiple resolutions available, see below. Have a portfolio
to do, yay. *groan*. However, got 49 on history test (A+). Wait, I always get A+s on the history tests. Oh well.
I tried to decipher the cubic equation, but had to pull
my head out after about halfway through. Why can't they just stick it in a simple x=(insert long complex equation here)
format? I also, on my own, figured out that cos(pi/5)=(sqrt(5)+1)/4. I should probably design a framed version of
this site for those browsers that don't support HTC (NS, Mozilla, probably Opera). This thought came to me because
I finally found an example of a website that properly uses frames. Suprising, I
know. Hmm... A Day In The Life of A Nerd.
11.03.02 Added Lightburst. Yes, I have been using photoshop quite
a bit lately.
11.02.02 Added Starburst One.
11.01.02 Added Intrinsic.
10.25.02 Added Jess's site, rearranged the Explosion background stuff, and revised my CSS a little.
10.25.02 Removed type script, because it doesn't contribute to the page. I hid old news,
and realized that my spiffy show/hide script doesn't work in mozilla.
10.24.02 Uploaded my backgrounds, and gave them a pretty section of their own in "links";
check 'em out. I think I did something else, but I'm not sure what.
10.14.02 Uploaded some more pics.
10.02.02 Finally! We're speeding up a little in calc! Transferred the site to cox.
They support HTC, which is nice.
9.15.02 Just cleaning up a little... The help files
for the MSFT script editor are wonderful! They even have a Jscript tutorial and a good bit
of DHTML in there, which is really spiffy.
9.09.02 Nothing in particular happening... On the bright side of the fights at PHS, it's
reducing the school population, which means fewer people to trip over on my way to classes. Yay.
