An earlier version of this novel was a semi-finalist in the Amazon Breakthrough Novel Award contest of 2007-8 (then-titled McAllister's Redemption). That earlier version earned a review containing the quote "...the reader of intelligent sci-fi (John Clute) and fantasy (Tolkien) should be won over by this artfully plotted modern myth."

Specialist Sparks

Sandy Sparks has finally gotten things figured out. She's got a new boyfriend, and the next three years of her Army career on Fort Huachuca in Arizona suddenly seem a little brighter.

But a detail she and her boyfriend pull is badly planned, and will fail. Sandy figures it's up to her and Ben to make the US Border Patrol's request for assistance work out.  She quickly finds that things don’t add up, and it isn’t helping that the Army left Sandy and her fellow soldiers out of Desert Storm.  Bored soldiers want to do dumb things, and the soldiers of D-86th Signal are no exception.  Still, the Border goes about its daily business of smuggling, gunfighting, and trafficking.  Now moving in elevated political circles, Sandy’s got to put the brakes on before things really get out of control. 

The young soldiers are on a collision course with the Border.
