Student/Teacher: The character becomes involved in an aspect of the Student/Teacher relationship. An old Professor might invite them along on a dig, or a student might seek them out for training only they can provide. The character's professional status - either as a Teacher, "the Fastest Gun in the West", or an Optant favored by Lanala - should be enhanced by the successful culmination of the subplot, and called into question, or lost entirely, if events go poorly.
Note: Due to the Law of Fame, characters in or from the Badlands gain two Possibilites per act for the Student/Teacher subplot.

Alternately, the character can forgo the usual Possibility awards for the subplot, and instead use it to gain a new skill during the adventure. The character must still find a Teacher - or have a Teacher find them - and spend at least one scene in uninterupted study - most often a great deal of drudge work, at the character's expense. At the end of this scene, the character may spend one (1) Possibility to gain the new skill, and may raise it to a maximum of one less than the Teacher's value through standard expenditure (2 poss to get to +2, 2+3 poss to get to +3, etc.). The character is now considered to know the skill, and can begin using it without penalty or additional Possibility expenditure, both for the duration of the adventure, as well as any subsequent.
Note: This last aspect of the subplot is quite common in Nippon Tech, though cosmologists are at a loss to explain exactly why. Due to what amounts to indentured servitude on the part of the Student, some say it is an esoteric application of the Law of Profit. Because of the reason the Teacher is most often sought out, others point to the Law of Vengeance as a likely cause.
