LubDub Bird

The LubDub is a small avian, similar to a sparrow, growing to a size roughly that of a humanoid fist. It is a briliant red in color, and can easily be mistaken for a cardinal at a distance. It takes it's name from the soft and melodious call it issues after having pecked open the chest of it's victims, eaten their still beating hearts, and made a nest of their vacant rib cage. The LubDub Bird will remain in it's new home for a few weeks, up to a month, before once again going out in search of food. While very protective of it's best, the LubDub is not very territorial, and any number of birds may roost together as long as there are enough bodies to go around. (In rare circumstances, as many as a dozen, or more, birds have been known to inhabit a single body!)

Exactly how the LubDub fits into the Ecology of Fear is a matter of some contention. Some point to it's purely instinctual behaviour and say that it is not in fact a true Horror, but merely an animal, albeit one with very horrific habits. Others say that this is the mark of a truly cunning beast, while still others claim they are receptacles for the most degenerate of Corrupted Souls, similar in status to Disembodied Hands or Zombies. The fact that young LubDubs are a soft blue in color, and the adults retain some of this color in their pinfeathers has led some to believe that the LubDub is one of the mythical species of "living eternity shards". So far no one who has chosen to hunt the LubDub to test this theroy has ever been heard from again. Nightmares and Occultists, particularly those dealing with the creation of undead Horrors, have found the LubDub very useful in disguising the unliving nature of their automatons. When placed in the chest of a Zombie or similar creature, the LubDub's call approximates the sound of a humanoid heartbeat. And, as long as the LubDub is set free to feed at least once a month, it also provides enough blood to produce a living, if not particularly healthy complexion, as well as well up in bruises and small cuts. (Increase the DV for spotting the undead as non-living by +3.)
