This spell, in many varrying versions, was originally tought to sailors in Aylse in case of emergency. With the invention of Focused items and Wards, it has fallen into disuse among professionals, but many Ayslish Seamen don't believe you are a real sailor until you can cast this spell. It has propagated quite quickly outside of Aysle, primarily in the tourist industry, as a means of exploring underwater without bulky equipment or extensive training.
To cast the spell, the caster need only expell the air in their lungs, which then travels to the surface at a rate of ten meters per round (speed 5). Snorkel then draws a small (roughly the same size as the casters windpipe) column of air from the surface (at the same speed), and returns waste gases through a parallel column. It is this casting method which has kept the spell from wide use, as most people when underwater do not want to waste any air, or wait any time for the spell to fully function. It is also the best example of the sense of humor among most seagoing Ayslanders.
The spell is centered on the caster, so they cannot swim out of it's effects as long as they remain within a direct line of 40 m of the surface. (Though not observed in Aylse, this 40 m limit is the depth at which biological effects such as "the bends" become problematic in Core Earth and other cosms.) If the character swims below a non-air permeable surface, such as into a cave or under a ship, the spell will only travel at a rate of 10 m per round, to it's maximum 40 m, depth plus distance traveled. The spell also only provides six liters of air per round, which is enough for casual efforts, but any fatigue results - from the Drama Deack or through Pushing - are increased by one.
