Saturday, July 5, 2008 - HE SAID: We spent all day in Glacier National Park. This was my 2nd time visiting the park and Marce's first. I was hoping that it was as beautiful this time as I remembered. I needn't have worried. It was awesome. It turns out that the road that goes through the park called "The Highway to the Sun" had just opened two days before we arrived. Apparently they had so much snow this year that the road opened up much later than in the past. We parked at the visitor's center at the west entrance of the park and utilized the free shuttle service. When we arrived at the pass, it was cold and windy and we were glad we had brought jackets with us. I think there was still 5 to 6 feet of snow in places at the top. There were so many waterfalls it was hard to know which one to watch. There is some road construction going on and at one point the road is down to one lane so after a while the congestion got quite bad. Fortunately we had arrived early and skated through without any problem. We saw elk, deer, bighorn sheep, goats, and the highlight of the trip, a large bull moose grazing in a river near the road. We had lunch in the park, and a very tasty ice-cream cone on the way out. I tried the Huckleberry flavor. Similar to blueberry and seems very popular around here. Marce had one called Moose Mania. Vanilla with chocolate chips, caramel, and peanut butter cups in it. Decadent. We keep saying we have to walk more, but so far have not.
