The first installament was the original Dead or Alive for the Sony Playstation. It had several features unique from other fighting games of the time. The most obvious one was the women had (optional) bouncing boobies. This feature went from almost no motion to a nearly constant, unnatural bobbing.
Another feature was a large selection of different costumes for each character. A good player could earn up to 15 costumes for each character (some characters had less). A new one was unlocked everytime that character completed Tournament mode or just through extended play.
While many games had an "out of ring" area or you just ran to the edge of the screen/world, this game featured a "danger zone". When a character was knocked down in this area, they would take additional damage and would be blown high up into the air. The degree of damage could be set to different levels by the player.
And one item borrowed from some of the 2-D fighters was an animated background. While it wasn't that much in this installment, it was something else that made this game stand out among the 3-D fighting games.
These additions to the classic fighter game gave it the ability to be played for laughs as well as seriously. In a time before the "got to collect them all" requirement for games, it was fun to see how many silly costumes you could unlock for the characters.
