He served in the Civil War as a sergeant in the Seventy-Fifth Ohio Volunteer Infantry and was captured at the Battle of Gettysburg. For 15-1/2 months, he braved the horrors of the Andersonville prison. During that time, 8,547 soldiers in the Union army, many of whom were his close friends, died. He could have been paroled by taking the Confederate oath of allegiance but refused to do so.
