Dogs Background Info Q and A Application Contacts

Common Questions and Answers

  1. What are the fees to adopt a dog from San Chris Adopt A Pet farm?
The regular fee is $ 75.00 to adopt a dog. This includes spay/neuter, all shots, and heart worm testing. All dogs are on heart worm preventive. The fee may be reduced or eliminated depending on circumstances. Let us know if the fee would present a financial burden for you. Our goal is to get the dogs adopted and hopefully cover some of the costs, not to make money.

  2. How do I adopt a dog?
You need to fill out our application. We will check your references and call you. MaryLou will make arrangements to bring you the dog and make a home visit. She can also see how your dog gets along with your new one, if you have a dog or more. This can all be completed in a couple days. We'll hold your check for one week to make sure your new family member is working out. We will call you before we deposit the check.

  3. What if I have a problem with a dog I've adopted?
If you decide the dog is not working out, call us to make arrangements to return the dog. You can also call us if you have any questions about the dog.

  4. Is fencing required for the dogs?
We prefer that you have fencing because it is safer for the dog and more convenient for you if you have to housetrain the dog. Dogs need and love to run. We prefer that your dog live inside and has a fenced yard to play in. Taking the dog for a daily walk is great too, but that can be difficult in bad weather or if you're sick

  5. Is obedience training required?
Obedience training is highly recommended! Most failed adoptions are due to lack of training, so we can't emphasize this enough. Try the website for the Association of Pet Dog Trainers for a list of positive trainers in your area.

  6. What is crate training?
Crate training provides a den in which your dog can eat and/or sleep and is highly recommended for younger dogs for both security and house-training issues. For more information about crate training, please see: American Dog Trainers Network: Crate Training

  7. How should I introduce my newly adopted dog to my existing pets?
We recommend introducing a new dog to your family's existing dogs in a neutral spot (perhaps a park) with both on lead and both handlers holding treats. Allow them to see each other and approach slowly, giving out treats and praise liberally. As they make contact, continue to praise, but withhold the treats. Allow them to sniff and get to know each other, holding tightly to the lead until it's obvious there will be no problems. If all goes well, take a walk and let them spend time together.
