In this picture, I literally look like I should have been in the Blair Witch Project movie (3rd party comment that I found very humorous)

Ok, it's
official. 'Literally' has just surpassed 'ironic' as the most misused
and abused word in the English language. First I will recap on the
word 'ironic'... i·ron·ic adj. - Poignantly contrary to what was expected or intended. Many people use the word 'ironic' to replace the words 'coincidental' or 'improbable', instead of using, say, the CORRECT word to describe the situation at hand. There was a song some time back, done by Alanis, titled 'ironic', which listed a lot of situations in which an extreme misfortune occurs, but in ALL of her examples, only ONE of which is actually 'ironic' (if you are an 'Alanis fan' and are curious as to which one I am referring to, first slap yourself in the back of the head for being an 'Alanis fan' in the first place, and then refer to the 'Mr. Play It Safe was afraid to fly' lines). I can not completely cast blame on Alanis for two reasons: 1) It was misused LONG before her song 'ironic' 2) She is Canadian There are many wonderful uses for the word "ironic", especially in the world we live in now. For example, "It is ironic that someone would write a song called 'Ironic' and not even know the definition of it's word." Now, the word "literally"... lit·er·al·ly adv. - In a literal manner; word for word. The word "literally" is used to define when something is exaggerated and when something actually occurred, so misusing this word is literally abusive to the English language. I have noticed lately, people saying things like "I literally died laughing", to sporting news announces proclaiming "he literally got split in two on that tackle". Anyone that has spoken with me in person knows that I am infamous for using words out of context, so if we are announcing a nationwide 'free for all' on the English language, maybe I would be able to speak more freely in person without fearing remorse or embarrassment for my lack of linguistic abilities. If that is the case, I will literally fly up into the air, spin three times, and ironically fall to my impending doom. |
