Patches and Stuff

This patch was awarded after a crewmember earned seven Highly Qualified ratings on their readiness checks.

This is the 381st Strategic Missile Wing patch. All personell directly assigned to the wing wore this patch. This included Evaluators and the Senior Instructor crew. Threst of the instructors were assigned to one of the squadrons and wore that patch instead.

Squadron patch for one of the two squadrons at McConnell AFB in the 381st Strategic Missile Wing. This is the one for the 532nd Strategic Missile Squadron. The other squadron was the 533rd and had a blue patch. I'm sorry do not have one to show here.

A unique patch designed by the 381st for unit recognition. Aircraft crews get patches to acknowledge the number of missions they flew, so we came up with the idea of Missions Under Kansas for missile crews. With an average of eight alerts (duty shifts at the site) per month, a crewmember achieved 200 alerts in about two years. There were also 100 mission and 200 mission arches that go over this patch for more missions.

A later version of the patch that Standardization/Evaluation members wore. These were iron-on and not like the older stitched type patches. Stan/Eval members performed qualification checks on crewmembers to verify their combat readiness. The evaluators wore yellow scarves and were affectionally known as "Yellow Breasted Nit Pickers."
The missile crew uniform was a blue fatigue type uniform made of a lighter weight material than standard fatigues. The standard or line crewmembers wore blue scarves with their uniforms while Instructor crewmembers wore maroon scarves. A pin was awarded for an HQ or Highly Qualified qualification check. The pin indicated the number of HQ's a crewmember had earned and was worn on their scarf.
