Rules for Individual Match Play (16-32 Players)
The format is individual match play, governed by the USGA Rules of Golf
Rounds 1, 2, and 3 may be played on any course as agreed to by the match participants.
Rounds 4, the consolation match, and the final match must be played on the Newport News Golf Club Deer Run course
A player whose age is less than 65 shall play from the white tees.
A player whose age is 65 or greater and when their age is added to their course handicap is less than 85 shall play from the white tees. (Example: 65 years old + 12 handicap = 77 [White Tees])
A player whose age is greater than 65 and when their age is added to their course handicap is greater than 85 will play from the white tees. (Example: 66 years old + 19 handicap = 85 [Senior Tees])
Matches sha1l be determined based on a random drawing (1st drawn will play 2nd drawn, 3rd drawn will play 4th drawn, etc.). In the event that less than 32 players sign up, bye’s will be inserted to complete the field and will also be drawn randomly.
All match play indices must be converted to the course handicap prior to the start of the match, based on the players’ current handicap as posted on the VSGA website. NOTE: The VSGA now updates the handicap indices twice a month.
The difference in strokes must be provided to the player with the higher handicap
Strokes are given on the hardest handicap hole, starting with the number 1 rated hole, through the remaining holes until all strokes are accounted for.
Upon completion of each hole, the player with the lowest NET score is the winner of the hole. If the net scores are the same, no one wins the hole.
If a match is played during a normal association event, all putts must be holed out (no concessions) to be eligible for normal association event awards.
If a match is played during a normal association event, a separate score card must be maintained to record the match play scores.
If both participants of a match agree to conduct the match during an association event, 1 of the match participants must contact one of the tournament chairmen (Bill Murphy or Ernie Murphy) to arrange for the 2 participants to be paired together.
In the case of a player having a claim, upon conclusion of the round, both players shall consult with the golf course professional (Greg Overton) to resolve the claim.
The match shall be declared as won, once a player wins more holes than the number of holes remaining.
If a match is still tied after 18 holes, the winner shall be determined in the following order:
Winner of Back Nine wins the Match
If tied on the Back, the winner of the Front Nine wins the Match.
If tied on the Front, the scores for each hole, starting with Number 18 and going backwards to hole 1, shall be compared. The winner of the Match shall be determined by the winner of the last hole.
If a match is played during a normal association event, once the match is over, play shall continue according to the rules of the tournament being played.
Upon conclusion of the match, the results shall be provided to Gary Wasmer (wasmerg@cox.net or 888-3280)
All round 1 matches must be completed by May 4
All round 2 matches must be completed by June 23
All round 3 matches must be completed by August 17
All round 4 matches must be completed by October 1
