2007 ANNUAL REPORT of ACTIVITIES

Beautification

  • Organized the 15th annual -- and most successful -- Town-wide Earth Day clean up assisted by the Highway Department and many individuals, organizations and businesses.

  • Obtained donated t-shirts and refreshments and a grant of $200 for entertainment

  • Provided two Mutt Mitt stands and bags that were installed by the Highway Department at Burrs Hill Park and Hugh Cole Recreation Park

  • Maintained plantings at the intersection of Long Lane and Schoolhouse Road, on Metacom Avenue and at the Baker Street Scenic Waterfront Overlook

Education

  • Sponsored two Wildlife Conservation talks at the George Hail Library: bats and Osprey

  • Expanded photos and content on the Warren Conservation Commission website: www.warrenconservation.org

Habitat Restoration

  • Working with the Highway Department cleared the Town-owned lot on Fatima Drive to ready it fordevelopment as a suburban wildlife habitat.

  • Met with a representative from National Grid to initiate plans for additional Osprey nesting poles.

Advocacy

  • Commented on Coastal Resources Management Council proposed changes to their management procedures

  • Provided advisory opinions to the Town Council and the Planning and Zoning Boards regarding zone change requests, and development proposals

  • Advocated for protection of existing and establishment of new public rights of way to the water 

  • Supported open space bond

Compliance

  • Monitored illegal brush cutting and tree felling along the bike path

  • Inspected areas of citizens’ complaints and referred them to appropriate State agencies

  • Monitored easements and rights of way to assure public access to conservation land and prevent misuse of public property

Outreach

  • Met with Walter Burke, Bristol’s Recreation Director, to discuss Bristol’s rights of way to the water marking program

  • For the third year, staffed a Warren Conservation Commission informational booth at the Quahog Festival

  • Attended Touisset Point energy meetings

Beautification

  • Added plantings and plaques to the Baker Street Scenic                   Waterfront Overlook

  • Organized the 14th annual Town-wide Earth Day clean up assisted by the Highway Department and many individuals, organizations and businesses. Obtained  donated t-shirts, refreshments, gift certificates for a raffle, and a grant of $200 for entertainment. Initiated “trashure hunts”

  • To assure that Warren is a walk-able Town, worked with the Highway Department to replace some crosswalks

  • Maintained traffic island plantings at the intersection of Long Lane and Schoolhouse Road and on Metacom Avenue

 Education

  • Expanded photos and content on the Warren Conservation Commission website: www.warrenconservation.org

  • Planned a series of Wildlife Conservation talks to be presented at the George Hail Library

  • Supported the Kickemuit River Council’s designation as the Kickemuit Watershed Council

Habitat Restoration

  • Installed bat boxes and monitored active Osprey nests and bird nesting boxes

  • Met with Audubon to discuss habitat restoration opportunities for Town-owned land

  • Working with Warren’s Department of Public Works, completed the Baker Street Scenic Waterfront Overlook

  • Maintained traffic island plantings at the intersection of Long Lane and Schoolhouse Road and on Metacom Avenue

  • Organized the thirteenth Town-wide Earth Day clean up assisted by the Highway Department and many individuals, organizations and businesses. Obtained donated t-shirts, refreshments, gift certificates for a raffle to increase participation, and a grant of $250 for entertainment.

Education

  • Published and distributed Warren Rights of Way and Conservation Land brochure

  • Created and posted the Warren Conservation Commission website: www.warrenconservation.org

  • Supported open space bonds

  • Provided advisory opinions to the Town Council and the Planning and Zoning  Boards regarding Market Street rezoning, zone change requests, and unmerging of lots

  • Advocated for protection of existing and establishment of new public rights of way to the water

  • Reviewed drainage problems at new development

  • Completed initial eel grass project in the Kickemuit River with Save the Bay

  • Monitored active Osprey nests and bird nesting boxes

Beautification

  • Provided a bike rack and permanent box-planter and planted day-lilies and rosa rugosa at Baker Street Scenic Waterfront Overlook

  • Maintained traffic island plantings at the intersection of Long Lane and Schoolhouse Road and on Metacom Avenue

  • Organized the twelfth Town-wide Earth Day clean-up assisted by the Highway Department, the Town Litter Committee, and many individuals, organizations and businesses. Obtained donated t-shirts and a grant of $200 for entertainment

Advocacy

  • Advised RI Division of Parks and Recreation about applications for brush trimming along the bike path; monitored the trimming

  • Provided advisory opinions to the Town Council and the Planning and Zoning  Boards regarding  studies, zone changes, ordinances, and development proposals

  • Studied noise ordinance and zero-run-off ordinance

Compliance

  • Notified CRMC, DEM or other agencies regarding violations of environmental  regulations

  • Monitored easements and rights of way to assure public access to Conservation land and prevent misuse of public property

  • Reviewed drainage problems at new developments

Education

  • Designed a rights of way and conservation land brochure assisted by the Eastern RI Conservation District

  • Began electronic filing of meeting notices on RI State site

  • Supported local and state open space bonds

Outreach

  • Served on the Litter Task Force

  • Joined the RI Association of Conservation Commissions
