United Interfaith Action

Uniting Congregations for Action

We are developing the power and leadership to be effective on problems concerning youth, crime, housing, jobs and education that deeply affect our families.

United Interfaith Action (UIA) is a predominately congregation based community organization for the neighboring cities of Fall River and New Bedford.

Delivering testimony

• UIA is multi-issue, multi-racial and inter-denominational.

• UIA is dedicated to promoting justice and improving the quality of life for all residents of Southeastern Massachusetts.

UIA strives to serve as a catalyst to involve the residents in Fall River and New Bedford in critical community issues. It offers extensive leadership training to enable members to become active in public affairs by building self confidence and developing leadership skills. It teaches its members how to involve others to devise strategies that result in concete improvements in their lives.

In June of 1999, over 500 people attended UIA’s third major community meeting. The Mayors of Fall River and New Bedford pledged to continue to improve public safety and provide opportunities for youth, including:

• continuing after-school programs in New Bedford junior high schools and plans for programs in elementary schools

• opening six new after-school programs in five elementary schools with scholarships available to low-income families

• additions of library personnel at the East, South and Main libraries

• agreement by the police chiefs to address neighborhood public safety issues
