What a great web page! The son of a "maintainer" the stories
bring back great memories of our family's time with the 305th Bomb Wing
at Bunker Hill from 1961-1965. My father was CMSgt John R Smith, Jr...FieldMaintenance
Squadron. He..and our family friends lived and died with that airplane..what
a great one it was.
Names of other maintainers like, Lester Hoover, Yablonski, Ames,
and Guglimetti...flood back. As a young
kid...when dad graduated from the Maintenance School at Convair,
I was able to get up in the cockpit for a
photo. It was a special time....with even more special people. Thanks

We at the Grissom Air Museum are in need of any pictures any of the
old B-58 guys have of the B-58 pilot simulator. We have a good display
of 18 military aircraft in our outdoor area, including a TB-58 (668), and
a very nice B-58 display inside the museum. We are continually trying to
enhance our displays, especially the B-58 area, and could use any artifacts.
I feel certain there are some B-58 artifacts "rat holed" out there someplace
and rather than let them gather dust why not let the general public enjoy
that beautiful airplane just as we did (we had 100,000 visitors last year).Again,
presently we are in need of any pictures of the B-58 pilot simulator that

Worked as a Bomb/Nav Technician on B-52F's at Barksdale in the early
sixties. We lost some guys to the B-58 program. Anyone out their remember
TSG William Williams or SSG Gaylord Mason? Also a fire control troop, Davis
W. Denman?
The 58's used to fly supersonic over Shreveport regularly--scared
the hell out of my inlaws when they were visiting from Ohio. I debriefed
a B-58 RN once. He laughed when he saw the look on my face when he gave
me the true airspeed for his bomb run. They should have used it longer.

Thanks for providing a site with cockpit details of the
Hustler jet.I just bought the Monogram 1/48 model of it and
this will greatly help in adding detail to it.The capsule
ejection system was quite a neat idea.I am impressed with
the looks of this plane and was surprised at it's speed
capability.I imagine it was able to run away from just about
all the fighters around at that time.Congratulations on a

NOTE FROM DARRELL: Just to prevent anyone from being misled
by Josh's comments, the Hustler is/was a bomber not a fighter and
it was nuclear-only so it WOULD have done PLENTY damage if used.
But, like SAC's motto, "Peace is our Profession", it was never used in

I was in Azores Islands, 57-59 as an airways radio operator. Don't
remember if it was a B47 or B58, but when they came on the air and keyed
the transmitter to talk, they knocked out everyone else, there was a long
hesitation, then they would talk. Call sign I remember was "Texas 80".
Really enjoyed working with the high flyers going back and forth across
the atlantic.

Great web site. I was briefly assigned to the 43rd Bomb Wg at Carswell
in 1963. After retiring from the Air Force I had the pleasure of working

This is great to find such a website! I was in the Air Force as
an airman from 04-66 to 01-70, and was in the 825th Medical Group at LRAFB.
I was one of the altitude chamber guys. I was a technician, taught classes
in emergency escape, night vision, etc. I assisted in mansizing for the
B58 crews, taught a class in operation of the capsule ejection seat, and
frequently had to test ride the capsule ejection seat trainer at a hanger
on the flight line. I love the B58 and always admired it and you guys who
flew it. Thanks for doing this!

I like the music. Reminds me of "my" ol' Huey, tail number
15765. I crewed a mighty fine UH1H June 70' to June 73' in the US ARMY,

NOTE FROM DARRELL: SORRY SCOTT. The only ones left are static
displays. I would guess the last one flew in about 1970.
Except for the static displays they were destroyed as part of the SALT
treaty.

Compliments to those who have contributed and, or, assembled this
most worthy part of America's Air Power history. I had the pleasure of
seeing one of her type at an open house at Fairchild AFB in Spokane WA.
While she was dwarfed by the massiveness of SAC's enormous B-36's, her
sleekness, the proportion of those four J-79's to the rest of her size,
made her appear as potent as she was. Sadly her service had a brief lifespan
but perhaps this is a testimonial to her being too far ahead of her time.....

My Dad, James Webb, helped to design the B-58. In particular, he
was on the team of engineers who used slide-rules to calculate how much
steel to put in the nose to balance the aircraft and endure the high temperatures
expected at Mach 2. All my live I've been fascinated with the B-58. I have

What wonderful memories! I lived in Ft. Worth when the "Bomber Plant"
was built and moved back there to work for Convair in April, 1956. I was
an Engineer in the Armament and Special Weapons Design Group. My first
three years, I was part of the group which developed the tail gun system.
I personally fired hundreds of rounds from the 20 mm Gatlig Gun into the
"Gun Butts" at the north end of the plant. It was horrible developing a
feed system that would handle 4000 rounds per minute. I also did some design
work on the arming, fusing, and release system for the "Two Component"
weapons pod. My last three years there, I worked in Crew Escape, developing
the capsules subcontracted to Stanley Aviation in Aurora, Colorado. At
that time is was considerably lighter and was an almost perfect 95 percentile
test subject (dummy). I was encapsulated many times during the development
of the foot and leg restraint system. Lots of fun! G.E. hired me away from
Convair in 1962, and I ended up in Houston supporting that thing called
Apollo. That was fun too!

I was a member of the 305 Armament and Electronics Squadron and
worked on the Nav Aids Equipment from Nov 1965-Jan 1969. As a pilot you
would have been very aware of our equipment, in that we maintained the
IFF, TACAN, and ILS. They tell me that "the last chance" back-up for the
ILS was the aero clubs hanger(bldg S22) out your right window, the nose
up attitude made seeing the runway not an option.
I started my work career in SAC and that set the standard for my
life.

My dad Msgt. Charles Clifford Kerce Jr. was crew chief on B-58,
59-2441, that won the Thompson Trophy for three international Speed with
payload records on January 14, 1961, out of Carswell A.F.B.
I was born there in 1960. My dad was very proud of his accomplishments
in his 22 years in the air force as am I. He was an active member
of the B-58 Hustler Assoc. It will be an honor to become a member
myself to carry on a tradition. My dad passed away in April of 2001
and is currently resting in peace in DFW National Cemetery in Dallas, Texas.
He served his country well.

Just toured the USAF Museum in Dayton, OH. and the Strategic Air
Command Museum between Omaha, and Lincoln, NE. Got some great photos,

I've admired this plane since i was a kid. I used to hear those
"booms" often growing up in southern indiana (around north vernon). I remember,
sadly, that one crashed in town (north vernon indiana, i think) when i
was young. I'll never forget that, the tail section was in town, we went
to see it. I often have wondered if the crew made it out ok... Well, thanks

Can I join the B-58 Association you list in TX if I am not military
associated with the jet, but just love that particular aircraft? Looks
as though it is just for those who were involved with flight, design, building,

Tanker Nav 1965-1968 305th BW. Know the airplane well. Flew
many a refueling mission against the Husler. Thanks to the
B-58, when I was transferred to Florida I got to fly the rest of
my career against the SR-71 Blackbird. Retired in 1973. Great web page,

I can see the Bomber Plant from home and F-16's, F/A-18's, etc fly
over where I work daily. Kinda exciting at times. The B-58 was the first
model aircraft I assembled with the help of my favorite uncle who was in
the Air Force. He said they had a hard time finding paint that would stay
on the B-58. I would like to see film of the B-58 taking off and in flight.
I bet the sound is comparable to a B-1. I am acquainted with a fellow who
worked on the project. His Mach 2 card is in his wallet to this day. Quite
a history and quite a group to put such a craft together. I will enjoy
this website. Thanks for putting it together. I flew in small craft including
bi-planes doing aerial photography for a few years. Flying is the best
fun of all.

Great site. Brings back many fond memories of a great aircraft and
matching support and operational teams. I'm privileged to have served as
a member of the 43rd Bombardment Wing - 43rd AEMS as a DECM Technician
1960-1966 at Carswell & LRAFB. Wonderful experience, especially the
years with General (then Col.) "Brick" Holstrom as our wing commander.
One of my most prized possessions is my copy of the hardbound "43rd Bomb
Wing Yearbook" published in May of 1964 - just before the wing moved to
Little Rock.

Great stuff. I was in RBS and scored three B-58 bomb runs over Lake

My step dad worked at convair when i was a "kid". He worked on the
Hustler. One of my most profound memories was gettng to see two B-58's
"scramble" in the early '60"s. I will never forget the sound.(Or the sensation
that transended sound) as they stood vertually on end and nailed it directly
in front of us as we stood on the perimeter wire at Carswell. God I miss

Hi , great site. I was stationed at Bunker Hill/Grissom around 1967-68,305th
Security Police sq. I recall one of the Hustlers crashing on takeoff sometime
in 1968. I was at the "alert" pad mess hall having lunch when it happened,just
about noon as I recall. Guarded the wreckage in one of the hangars while
the GD guys were checking it out. That Hustler was one hell of an aircraft.

Hi, I just found your site thanks to Jess Boydston. I flew B52s
in the USAF and had an EWO with a "Mach 2 Raven" card in his wallet from
the B58s. Where you stationed at Carswell? We have a friend, Gen(ret) Paul
Krause (who we've lost touch with) who was involved with the B58 reunions
in Fort Worth. Great aircraft, of course it should be since it cost its
weight in gold to make! It was one of the first aircraft models I made.

I have seen a B-58 hustler only once at an air-Show at Westover
(Field) in 1959 and it broke the sound barrier at about 500 ft off the
deck.What a thrill.I was only in grade school at the time.The tower gave
us a 30 sec warning and to look to the north end of the field if you wanted
to see it. With it going that fast, a 1 or 2 sec glimpse was all we got.
It made only 1 pass and was gone.

Nice Site, I was a member of the 43rd AEMS in the Fire Control Shop.
Worked on the MD-7 system. I walked around the Pima Museum last week and
snapped a bunch of photos of the B58 there. What a shame to see such a
beautiful machine just flaking away, bit by bit. I was amazed to see that
the M61 Muzzle appeared to still be in the airplane. I wonder what ever
happened to all the guys in the shop. Can't even remember any names.

there are about 100 58 era people signed in there.

My father-in-law was a navigator on a B-58 crew, stationed at bunker
Hill in the early 60's. Unfortunately, he and his crewmates were killed
during a training flight, Sept. 14, 1962. Anyone out there remember Capt.Reinardo
Patrick (Pat) Moure or have any details about his last flight, it would

I was an A/C in the '58 from 1962 until 1966.I now volunteer at
the Grissom Air Museum 5 days a week. Along with 17 other aircraft we have
TB 663 on display. I am still in awe on how many people are so interested
in the '58;they have caused me to drag out my Dash 1. If anybody reading
this is ever up in the Grissom area stop in 'cause I'm sure you'll enjoy
our displays.

Was at Bunker Hill/Grissom 63-73 Looked at the top of a lot of B-58s.
Hot summer night refueling over Indiana with the 58 in burner was quite
a sight. More so if the AC would forget to tell us booms he was going to
light one off.

I'm currently designing a 1/9th scale, radio controlled model of
the B-58A to be powered with 2) 21# static thrust miniature turbines. (Will
be installed in the #2 and #3 nacelles) While I do have a 3-veiw from which
I'm currently working from, I'm always interested in obtaining others which
could prove more accurate. The other data I'm in ned of is the type of

Darrell, the B-58 Hustler was one of my favorite planes. As a kid,
I was always interested in the constant flow of new fighters and bombers
coming into the AF inventory. The B-58 was way ahead of its time. I finally
saw one at Meecham Field north of the Ft. Worth stockyards in 1994. Then
in 1998, I went back and it was gone! Where did it go? Do you know if there

to Galveston, TX. Among other places, B-58's are at Wright-Patterson
AFB, Dayton, OH (AF Museum), Tucson, AZ (Pima Museum), Omaha, NB (SAC Museum),
and Grissom AFB, IN.
My father was a B-58 DSO at Carswell and Little Rock until 1966
I think. He retired a Colonel in 1985. You probably know him. I still can
remember watching a B-58 on departure, sitting up on it's tail!

What a site! I have 8,000 hrs jet time (all civilian corporate),
my best model years ago was the B58. Saw one for about 3 seconds on TO
at Bunker Hill 0600 from the cab of a truck, got a knot on my head from
ducking. Spent from 93-97 hauling ammo, etc, visited the great one at Pima
Visited other site with dates of scrapping and almost had tears just thinking
about destroying that beautiful bird. Have seen hundreds of other ac at
Davis Monthan but glad that I didn't see the B58 in it's last days. Thanks
for the great web site. Was up to 1:30 am putting all the numbers on a

305th A&E from June 1959 till mid 1964. (went into computer
career field and did maintenance documentation on the 58's and 106's in
the same building as the Cafeteria directly across from the the HQ. Was
a Bom/Nav mech and graduated in the top 5 of the class in August of 1961
at Carswell (GDFW). 124 and 128 were my favorites worked for R. A. Cross
and Harry Schweitzer. Chief Murray was the BIG gun and Chief Hume was the

From 1958 until Mar1964 I was in the 415th FTD as a Hyd. Instructor
on the B58. During those 6 years I worked with the SAC Aero Club as flight
instructor and ground instructor. I spent much time in the 43rd Bomb wing
field maintenence hyd. shop. August 1963 I made an in service transfer
to the US Army Aviation branch starting as a heliocopter pilot and ending
up as a maint. officer. Retiring in 1972 after 2 trips to RVN. I spent
the next 21 years as a nuclear power plant inspector building fast attack
subs for the US navy. Now retired in Newport News VA

I retired from the USAF 1 Sept. 1974. The person that presented
me my retirement orders was Col. William R. Payne. He was the commander
of the 4200 OE&T Sqdn. at Edwards AFB, Ca. If some of you old timers
will remember he was the one that flew from New York to Paris in 3 hours
and 19 minutes in a B58. He was my commander for five and one half years
at Edwards AFB. (1969-1974) There is no finer person on this earth than
Col. Payne. We still keep in touch. He still flys out of southern California.
Col. Payne signed a photo of a B58 for a few years ago, which hangs in
my office. Thanks for letting me tell you about the best pilot and the
finest person I ever met

As a civilian pilot I was able to use the PAR system at Bunker Hill,
ala Grissom AFB in Indiana. I was receiving instrument instruction and
would spend two hours at a stretch under the hood flying the approach.
The young AF guys really liked the hands on experience. I used to see a
58 come screaming out of Grissom every once in a while. That must have
been like riding a rocket.

Just returned from the Year 2000 B-58 Hustler Association Reunion,
Ft. Worth Tex. Was a pilot in the B-58 when we shut down, Jan. 1970. No
other plane like the B-58. It's too bad we were not able to show our strength

The Hustler at the USAF Museum, in Dayton, as of 6/1/00, is parked
outside. It's normally inside. Apparently, late last week, it started leaking.
They determined that it had never been defueled, so they moved it outside
to drain it. Easy to get pictures, too. Don't know how long it'll be out
there. But suggest you hurry if you want pictures....

Gentlemen: My son, Christopher A. Richard; Lt.JG - USN, stumbled
on to your web page. He has heard me go on so much about the B58
Hustlers that I was privilaged to see plenty of while stationed at McCoy
Air Force Base in Orlando, Florida in the 60's that when he found this
site he immediately passed it on to me. I have ranted and raved so much
about the incredible sight of the B58's taking off and landing while I
was walking sentry duty around B52's on the alert pad for a part of my
4 years in the Air Force. While I didn't find alert duty particularly fascinating,
the occasional sight of a B58 taking off, with the afterburners kicking
in was something I will never forget. I know there are faster and more
sofisticated air- craft today but the sheer power of a Hustler screaming
off into the air like an arrow being shot from a bow was truly a sight
to behold. I've never had an interest in flying and must admit that airports
and commercial jets are not a big thrill to me but of all my memories of
four years in the Air Force the Hustler has truly remained one of the most
vivid. My hat is off to those of you who have endeavored to keep this aircraft's

from early 66 till the end. He flew one of the last to the bone yard. It

Darrell. Great web site! A few weeks ago CBS showed a new version
of the 60,s movie Fail Safe. George Clooney was shown as a B58 A/c wearing
a 305th Bomb Wing triangle patch on his shoulder. Unfortunly the cockpit
was not correct but thats Hollywood..I guess this is the only movie that
made any reference to the B58. Do you know of any? I was with the 305th

Great site. I was in the 305thOMS 1965-66. Was the NCOIC of
the maint. team at Edwards AFB in 1966 with 4 B58s where we broke the sound
barrier every 15 min from 0900 to 1500.Was a noise eval test project.
Project lasted 4 wks, so we made a lot of noise. We also took part
in the GE powered acft photo Op, when the F104 collided with the B70 and
both crashed. In late 66, I was in V.Nam taking the C7A away from
Army. As a new AF Unit we had to submit our Sqdn Emblem & Motto
to AF HQ's. We selected "The Hustler's". It was disapproved as it
was derogatory. Good thing the HUSTLER was named in the good old

I served in the USAF AT Grissom AFB.Ind. from 1968 to 1972.I was
in the 827th Med. Grp.(Surgery). I met and married ny wife at GAFB (Aug
'72.) I remember the B-58 very well! I now work for G.M.(22 yrs.)5 kids-1
gr.kid. I keep in touch with my old buddies, some now passed. My wife is
an R.N. and I work Material Handling at G.M. My father-in-law retired from
the A.F. after 30 years(air traffic control )(CMSGT William Hole ) and

Cool website.... one of the neatest planes that I have ever seen
and been in love with. The first time I saw the bird was when my dad called
home and told my mom to get us kids gathered up and down to the base. It
was pretty impressive at the age of 10. I guess it was on its way through
when it stopped at Davis/Monthan AFB in Tucson. This was back in 1962.
Anyway, all my brothers had plastic models of the plane and we finally
got to see the thing for real. All we could say was, "Wow!"

Love the B-58 , with this trend to History & WW2 renacting etc,
I have a proposal: Lets Build the B-58 or several B58 types BUT as Executive
Jets using millenium F22 Raptor avionics etc and engines. Imagine the implications
alone. People would pay fee to fly in Classic Cold War B58 anyway. My PO

Just a few lines about the time when I used to live in Sharon,
PA. Over the tv they said to remove dishes pots pans etc due
to the shock wave that a two ship formation of b-58's were going to do
as they did a mock bomb run on the steel mills back in the mid 60,s.
They were right, the ADC base at Youngstown, Ohio sent up some interceptors
but no way. Thats when I wanted to see a Hustler. Oh the sound
was loud, bring back the B-58.

Great site! Brings back memories. Worked many hours as a flight
line Bomb/Nav technician in the OE&T Squadron and 43rd AEMS. Was Bomb/Nav
tech who tweaked the system on airplane 59-2458 for project Heat Rise (Bendix
Trophy winner). Saw that airplane at Wright Pat before they moved her inside.
Still have Bob McDonald's watch worn during Heat Rise. General Dynamics
gave each crewmember a Rolex!! Still have a set of the orders assigning
us to Heat Rise.

Darrell - It's nice to connect with a very important part of my
past...the part that was responsible for my future. I was a flight surgeeon
with the 43rd BW, 1966-1969. I retired from the AF in 1988. I was lucky
enough to fly in the TB-58 twice. The last time was in 663 on 6/12/69.
Bob Phoenix was the AC. It was a Mach 2 flight (first TB back from Waco).
The isotherm was pretty high. So, we could not get Mach 2 below 50M. So,
we red-lined it (inlet temp) at 65M (I gave Bob a waiver to AFR 60-16)and
Mach 2.32. We finished the flight with a high speed low approach over the
base (LRAFB) and max performance vertical climb out. We crossed the approach
lights at 50 feet doing Mach 0.93. And climbed to 40M in a nearly vertical
attitude. Butch Desens and the FAA were kind to me. I'll never forget it.

Great site! Sure brings back a flood of memories. Was part of the
B-58 Test Force at Carswell AFB, that later became the 43rd bomb wing,

and I got to sit in the pilot's seat. I relived that experience in my thirties
when I enlisted in the reserves and worked on Electronic Warfare equipment

I'm 32 years old and have been an aircraft enthusiast for at least
25 of those years.I have never been much for reading books, but every chance
I had to go to the library, I almost always was sure to get some sort of
aircraft book.I can say without a doubt that of 3 planes that stand out
in my memory as favorites(including the Constellation and SR-71) the B-58
was the most impressive! I was fortunate enough to see the SR-71 just before
it was retired and just last weekend saw one of only three "Connies" still
flying.I have yet to see the Hustler in person. Your site has been the
next best thing and the many letters in your guestbook have been most interesting!

My father, Major (at that time) Theodore C. Keys, was Maintenance
Supervision Officer and Squadron Commander of the 305th OMS at Bunker Hill
from June 1959 to June of 1961. The car horns honking, signaling an alert
in the middle of the night as everyone rushed to the flightline, is a memory
still vivid in my mind. Even though the booms of breaking the sound barrier
were "normal" to us, I don't think my mother or brothers or I ever got
used to the sound of an alert. We lost Dad to a brain tumor in 1984. I
wish that he could have enjoyed the "miracles" of cyberspace and seen this
page and all the comments!!!

I arrived at Grissom AFB, IN, about 6 months or so after the last
B-58 left. Many of the pilots, navs, and RSO's had transitioned to tankers.
There were a lot of B-58 stories. Those guys really loved that aircraft.
I only wished I had had a chance to fly in it.

Enjoyed your site. I visited Bunker hill as a kid. My uncle was

I flew B-47s from Mar 59 through Jul 64 with 384th BW at Little
Rock AFB, and from Jul 64 through Nov 65 with 509th BW at Pease AFB. I
applied for B-58s with the 43rd at Little Rock, but was turned down because
I had flunked an instrument check ride because of a bad ILS approach just
months before my interview. I was greatly disappointed. My BombNav from
384th BW, Charles E. "Chuck" Decker did stay at LRAFB and was a BombNav

Nice Site! I worked on the B58 program at Convair/General Dynamics
during the period of 1960 thru 1962 when the program terminatd. I worked
for my previous bosses from GD at Southwest Standards Lab until I went
into the USAF, SAC, 7th Bombardment Wing at Carswell AFB and worked on
ECM systems in the B52G and B52H until Aug., 1965. I am looking for a site
where I can contact old friends who were in my outfit or associations that

Air Show in April or May 1961, catches my eye since I had to notify the
next of kin by wire frm Paris, France at Orly Airport. That was a lot of
