Dreamland Computer Club

General Meeting
 November 7, 2007

At 9:00 A.M. President Judy Gardner called the meeting to order with 39 members and guests present. She welcomed the club members.  She mentioned that some remaining club member badges for the past year were in the box on the back table. New badges will not be available until the middle of January. 

President Gardner thanked John Highland for all this work at the computer Lab.  He removed the Windows 98 computers from the lab and took outdate equipment to the Red Mountain High School program.  She thanked Janet Harbaugh for the table for laptops in Room 9. She also thanked Board members who remained during the summer for keeping the program and classes running.  Club members were asked to only donate working XP equipment and flat screen monitors to the club. No keyboards or mice would be accepted.  Members could take old computers to the School program or Sunshine Acres, however,  she cautioned that Sunshine Acres did not clean the hard drive before they sold it.

The minutes of the October meeting were read.

The treasure’s report was read.

Announcements:   Joanne Nipple and Dottie Bagshaw, members of the nominating committee submitted the slate of candidates running for the open positions on the board as follows:  Catherine Anderson, Donna Hanson and Gene Meade.  No nominations from the floor were presented at this time. Out going board members are Chuck Krasselt, Tom Sides, and John Shideler.

On November 17, at 9:00 AM, Pat Davis from “Serving Online Seniors” will present information about Windows Vista operating system.  There will be no classes or meetings the week of Thanksgiving.

Dues paid now will be for the 2008 session.

Dee McBain sends out weekly reminders of activities and if your current E-Mail address has changed, please let President Gardner know and appropriate measures will be taken.

A drawing for a Smart Computing subscription was won by Kay Hawbaker.   Dwight Wubenhort was the winner of the 50/50 raffle drawing, winning $16.00.

Presentation:
Nick Coons and Michael Cady from “The RedSeven Computer Company” gave the presentation on the Linux Operating System.  Open Source, the software creation model that has been around since the beginning of computers, especially among universities, subsided in the late 70s

and early 80s under the proprietary software model.  However, it is regaining popularity more recently as the graphics and toolbar are more user- friendly.

After the presentation, President Judy Gardner reviewed the calendar of events in November and reminded members that there would be no classes the week of Thanksgiving.

The meeting was adjourned at 10:30A.M.
