OLD BUSINESS:

John Ahrens gave an update concerning the progress of the club’s participation in the AZacc webcast project for our monthly speakers.  Tom Santoro, Mike Sorem and John attended an AZACC meeting concerning these presentations. John Ahrens and John Shideler also went to a meeting at Sunland Village East. Both times the webcast presentations were successfully conducted on Cox Cable Broadband connections with a few minor adjustments. DCC’s Qwest DSL wireless connection is not fast enough to allow a video and audio connection without buffering and distortion.  He went on to say that over the summer, the board will continue to see if DCC could get up to speed so that we could do these Webcam presentations.

President Santoro then explained Tal Hilton submitted her letter of resignation as Treasurer and from the Board, and that he was appointing Judy Gardner to the Board to fill that vacancy.  He then asked Mike Sorem, as Past President and board advisor, to explained further developments.

Mike Sorem explained that Tom Santoro also submitted his resignation, for personal reasons, as President and Board member; but that his resignation was not effective until after this morning’s General Meeting.  He also reported that the Board of Directors had met and elected the following officers to take office after the general meeting:

President:  Judy Gardner
Vice President:  John Shideler
Kay Hawbaker would continue as Secretary

He explained that we needed volunteers for the remaining positions on the Board. Then he announced that Judy Gardner wished to make a few comments.

Judy Gardner thanked Tom for all of his diligence, hard work and support.  She also thanked Tal Hilton for her past work as Treasurer. She also asked for volunteers to help with General Meeting check-in and other tasks needed to help the club run effectively.  She reminded the members that the May meeting would take place in Read Hall. She asked John Highland if he would continue to help with the Genealogy classes. Then, she requested a Special meeting of the Board of Directors for Friday, April 6, at 10:00 AM.

President Santoro then introduced our morning speaker, Jim Pavletich, the Public Affairs Officer for the Social Security Administration in this area. Mr. Pavletich told members that Social Security (SSA) is always looking for opportunities to share information about their programs and services.  For individuals who are computer literate, they are rapidly expanding Internet and online services.  He cautioned computer users to always enter the entire web address as there are many look-a-like sites which are a scam.  (www.socialsecurity.gov)

Also, he explained that SSA is interested in explaining their benefit programs (Retirement, Survivors, Disability, Medicare and Supplemental Security

He left handouts for us to put in the classroom.
