MINUTES OF THE DCC FEBRUARY
GENERAL MEETING

February 6, 2008

At 9:00 A.M. Mike Sorem, past president, called the meeting to order with 35 members and 1 guest in attendance.  He explained that Pres. Judy Gardner had asked him to fill in for her due to family illness in her family. He also reported on health updates for other club members.

Mike Sorem announced that John Shoemaker was doing the 2008 name tags and they would be ready next month.  He encouraged members to wear their name tags at meetings and classes. He also stated that Pres. Judy Gardner was updating the membership rooster and that would be ready soon.

The minutes of the January meeting were read and approved with several corrections.

Janet Harbaugh read the Audit committee’s report which stated that the accounts were correct. The treasure’s report was read giving a balance of $1166.44 and the report stands as read. Janet did add that she had 8 additional memberships which would increase the final balance of today’s date.

Old Business:

Mike Sorem announced the upcoming Potluck and introduced Catherine Anderson, chair of the Potluck Committee.  She told us that it would be in Farnsworth Hall February 20 at 11:00 AM, 2 weeks from today. The club would provide coffee, tea, and punch.  Evelyn Rounds and Barbara Miller would be available to help in the kitchen.  She reminded everyone to bring their own table service: plates, silverware and cups. Everyone should plan to bring a dish.  The club would not be providing meat.

Mike Sorem gave a brief report on the meeting of the Arizona Alliance of Computer Clubs (AZacc) attended by himself, John Ahrens, Kay Hawbaker, and Janet Harbaugh. He said that here was a very lively discussion concerning the difficulty getting speakers for the 40 different computer clubs around the valley and the ways to handle to problem. John Ahrens remarked that it was not unusual for a speaker to travel 3,000 to 5,000 miles in a month to attend all 40 clubs to give presentations. In the future, clubs will be asked to provide a small stipend to help defer independent speaker’s cost for gas and meals between clubs meetings.

John Ahrens  mentioned that webnars and teleconferencing  was a future plan, but many of the clubs did not have high speed hookups. Our computer club board is still attempting to work with the DVCC board to find a way to connect to a cable high speed connection so the computer club might get presentation via a teleconferencing hookup.

Mike Sorem informed members that February Calendars could be obtained at the computer lab and at the office. He then reviewed upcoming classes pointing out the change in the day for the Beginning computer classes and Janet Harbaugh’s cancellation of classes until the middle of March.  John Shideler would be starting an open lab on Thursday afternoon for Beginners to continue practicing with one to one help.

Two weeks ago, there was an article in the Speak out section of the “Independent”, criticizing the computer club for the $15.00 dues. The Board made a motion to address the article at the General Meeting and explain the club’s desire to keep the equipment in the Computer Lab updated as the primary reason for the membership dues. From the beginning, the computer club wanted to be autonomous and self-sufficient from the main DVCC Board.

Next month’s presentation is by David B. Whittle. He is the author of "Cyberspace: The Human Dimension".  Dave's been a leader in the PC revolution since 1979. Most recently, he’s been writing for Smart Computing. He will share new products and services that open up new horizons of possibility and solve problems you’re probably facing.

Charlotte Ward was the winner of the 50/50 raffle drawing, winning $15.00.

Program:

Mike Sorem introduced Kathy Jacobs, Microsoft MVP.  Kathy has been with us in the past and we know her as an enthusiastic presenter.  She is a Microsoft consultant, trainer, and writer of Microsoft programs Power Point and OneNote. Her presentation today was on OneNote, a powerful organizing program.

She writes on various topics for her own site www.OnPPT.com , and she blogs regularly at “Vitamin CH”.

Two copies of “OneNote” stand alone programs were raffled.  These copies were won by Maddy Leckey and Annie Province .

With no further business, the meeting was adjoined at 10:30 AM.

Respectfully submitted,

Kay Hawbaker, Secretary
