Discussion:
Actually, the statement is true, but not entirely true. It is illegal to import, transport, possess, or release alive a large number of "wild animals," including all of the above animals. It is also true that it is against the law to have any wild animal as a pet. However, there are many exemptions to the law, and it is possible to actually own any of these animals above, as well as any of the other animals listed in CFG 2118 so long as they have a permit (under CFG 2150) to keep or own the pet and do not allow it to escape.
The law makes it quite certain as to why this is necessary. According to CFG 2116.5: "The Legislature finds and declares that wild animals are being captured for importation and resale in California; that some populations of wild animals are being depleted; that many animals die in captivity or transit; that some keepers of wild animals lack sufficient knowledge or facilities for the proper care of wild animals; that some wild animals are a threat to the native wildlife or agricultural interests of this state; and that some wild animals are a threat to public health and safety."
