Something Like That is a follow-up to Under My Skin.  I wrote it in 3 months after being laid off.  So thank you, US government, for the unemployment checks.  I doubt I'll write another book this quickly, but who knows.

The hero of this book is Bill Polaski, Adam's new partner.  He has an eternal best friend complex and it gets worse when he realizes his high school crush, Vicki Whitley, just got a job in the DA's office.  They were good friends, but Vicki liked older, wilder boys and never knew she broke his heart the summer she chose Michael over him.  Bill and Vicki rekindle their friendship, and when Michael, to whom Vicki was married for five years, begins leaving her threatening messages and calling to let her know he's watching her, Bill insists on protecting her.  As they grow closer and begin to fall in love, Vicki helps Bill deal with his brother's impending death from leukemia, and his estrangement from his parents.

Between researching domestic violence, emotional abuse, and end stage leukemia, this was a somewhat depressing book to research.  Yet it was so much fun.  Exploring who Bill and Vicki were when they knew each other the first time, and who they have grown into know was a blast.  And Bill is such a great combination of a sweet beta guy and a strong alpha guy.
